Summary
Treatments for leukaemia (e.g. chemotherapy) severely deplete immune and blood cells from patients. Transplantation of new blood forming cells (blood stem cells) into these patients is essential, but challenges are faced with isolating sufficient numbers in ways that preserve their ability to reconstitute the blood post transplant. My research aims to advance understanding of current methods used to isolate these cells and ultimately to improve the success of blood stem cell transplantation.

Asthma is the most common chronic lung disease of childhood. Birth cohort studies show that early life environmental stressors may increase asthma risk. This study will examine the impact of multiple early-life stressors using a novel ‘exposome’ model in international birth cohort studies, to identify the most significant factors. This will allow for interventions in a planned Australian birth cohort study, leading to improved health for Australians.

Wildfires have become more frequent and severe the world over and the health impacts of the associated air pollution is a major gap in the current evidence. Working with lead agencies in air quality regulation, public health and fire management I will examine and compare the health effects of air pollution from deliberate burns, bushfires, wood heaters and other sources of air pollution. The research will focus on respiratory and heart disease to inform public health and individual patient care.

This project will identify genes that affect the environmental susceptibility for cardiovascular disease risk factors.
