Validation and Verification of Electronic Evidence: Developing a Testing Regime for Digital Forensic Software Reliability. Law Enforcement is analysing an exponentially-increasing quantity of Electronic Evidence - a 100,000 fold increase was experienced by the NSW police in the last decade. This is clear indication that computer related evidence is now an essential component of traditional crime investigation as well as computer crime. We intend to streamline the investigative process. This can only occur with the development of a validation framework from which we can build a testing regime to establish reliability of forensic tools and therefore the forensic investigative processes. The project provides the basis for the production of new high technology photonic products in Australia, the availability of at least one new unique facility for future scientific endeavour, and the generation of skillsets new to Australia. New IP will also be developed during the project. A successful outcome could also ultimately result in new products offering, for example, enhanced National Security through the Defence applications, better measurements of atmospheric contaminants through the sensing route, and more advanced telecommunications services at lower cost for citizens and businesses, and for lower operating costs for service providers.

This project falls within the ARC research priority goal, Smart Information Use. The innovative contributions of this project through the development of adaptive data stream mining algorithms for heterogeneous devices will have an impact on a range of emerging application areas such as:
1. Meeting time-critical, intelligent information needs of the mobile workforce (e.g. mobile healthcare professionals, stockbrokers). 2. Improving Intelligent Transportation Systems via in-vehicle analysis and crash prevention. 3. Facilitating 'on-board' analysis in sensors that monitor the environment and patients. The project will enhance Australia's leading international role in the area of data stream processing in distributed computing environments.Read moreRead less
Unlocking IP - Expanding public rights and the public domain in Australian copyright. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. Its significance is that healthy commons-based production of inform ....Unlocking IP - Expanding public rights and the public domain in Australian copyright. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. Its significance is that healthy commons-based production of information is essential to Australia as an innovative country and a democracy. The principal outcomes will be better understood and more efficient public rights licences, incentives to copyright owners to create them, and technical aids to allow users to find commons content.Read moreRead less

There is a significant effort in Australia and around the world to develop quantum information technologies. This project, by demonstrating a suite of critical building blocks for quantum information processing, will support Australia's strong position in this emerging technology.
A major motivation for the effort directed at quantum information technologies is the impact they will have on the security of data transmission, both in breaking existing encryptions and implementing new encryption systems. The successful completion of this project will provide the essential components for a secure long distance quantum communication network. Read moreRead less

Complex networks such large power grids, the Internet, transportation networks and co-operation networks of all kinds provide challenges for frontier technologies particularly computing, communication and control. In particular, advanced societies have become dependent on large infrastructure networks to an extent beyond our capability to plan and control them. The recent spate of collapses in power grids and virus attacks on the Internet illustrate the need for research on modelling, analysis of behaviour, planning and control in such networks. This project aims to establish research in this area for Australia's benefit.Read moreRead less

The emerging Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (WDM) optical network is a promising candidate for next-generation Internet, which provides enormous bandwidth and fast connectivity. Multicast in WDM networks is a fundamental problem which has wide applications including teleconferencing, entertainment distribution, etc. In this project we investigate the multicast and constraint multicast problems in both single-hop and multi-hop WDM networks by studying their computational complexities and devising scalable, high-quality approximation algorithms for them. The developed algorithms significantly improve the network performance and scalability, and the innovative approaches and algorithm techniques developed in this project are also applicable to other routing problems.Read moreRead less
