Behavioural research is a significant component of the annual spend in Australia on research and development. It is contended that 'best practice' behavioural research methods can be more systematised, transparent and visible; facilitating more complex, integrated and holistic research designs; and thereby, more cumulative and comparable results; thus enabling increased rigor, higher productivity and lower risk than have generally been the experience historically. This project proposes the formal conceptualisation and modelling of behavioural science research methods, by adapting them to the research design, the well understood concepts, tools and techniques of Information Systems design. Results are expected to form the conceptual basis of 'Research Design Systems.'Read moreRead less

Integrated network management (encompassing the integrated management of networks, systems and applications) systems are now based on the client-server paradigm using the manager-agent model standardised by ISO 7498-4 and IETF SNMP. The limitations of this paradigm are now evident in view of evolving active network technologies, the need for bandwidth optimisation, and escalating threats of cyber-terrorism that need to be effectively managed for the future success of evolving e-business services. Researchers have tried (with limited success) to use the intelligent agent approach to solve this problem. This project aims to develop and validate a new paradigm for integrated network management, called Distributed Autonomic Management (DAM) based on a community of cooperative static and mobile agents.Read moreRead less
Interacting with visualisations of extremely large graph structures on large displays. The latest technological progressions have delivered very large data sets that can be modelled as graphs or networks. Examples include: social networks, biological data, and software structures. This project will develop techniques to allow users to visualise the graphs in the entirety and directly interact with data.
Management of Complex Assets Using Smart Information Systems. It will develop an advanced conceptual framework, a dedicated smart system that is capable of handling uncertainty often associated with decision making in large complex operations. The benefits of this research are: a more competitive indusry with focus on markets; a smart system to demonstrate business-based decision making and generally a much more sophisticated approach to asset management.Read moreRead less

Unlocking IP - Expanding public rights and the public domain in Australian copyright. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. Its significance is that healthy commons-based production of information is essential to Australia as an innovative country and a democracy. The principal outcomes will be better understood and more efficient public rights licences, incentives to copyright owners to create them, and technical aids to allow users to find commons content.Read moreRead less

This project will produce tools to enhance collaboration between researchers at physically disparate locations. It builds on emerging Grid computer network technology to create virtual research communities that permit secure sharing of geographically disjoint resources such as data collections, computer software and computer processing power. The project’s test case will create a community of researchers into brain disease (e.g. schizophrenia) who are located in three Australian and one USA site and who will share their patient data, analysis tools and special-purpose computer equipment. The developed tools will allow relatively simple and rapid deployment of similar research grids suitable for a wide range of collaborative projects.Read moreRead less
