Emulating cellular transport processes in synthetic fluidic systems, so as to allow the controlled transport of reagents or products from one site to another, has the potential to add revolutionary capabilities to fluidic platforms. This project will explore the potential and limits of chemopropulsion and its use as a driving mechanism for cargo-carrying vehicles in fluids. The resulting fluidic transport systems could be used to transport medicine in the human body, act as chemical messengers for signal transduction in sensing or other systems or move cargo around microfluidic devices.Read moreRead less

In this way, this research will augment or enhance existing methods for the selective and direct manipulation of molecules by creating tools that allow chemists to prepare molecules under particularly mild conditions. The outcomes of the project will include the development of new technology for organic synthesis and forging novel approaches for chemical alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. This can contribute to making important compounds more efficiently, safely and cheaper to produce in the future.Read moreRead less

This research program aims to develop more efficient methods for the chemical synthesis of organic substances: the materials that make up all known life forms, our medicines, and many designed materials. This research involves primarily the invention of new, enabling science. Specifically, we are trying to develop new and very general strategies to make organic compounds selectively and more efficiently than before. A more efficient chemical synthesis means less waste, lower energy consumption and less environmental impact. Research of this kind is absolutely essential for the development of new medicines and materials. Australia lags behind many of the world's developed countries in this very important area of endeavour.Read moreRead less

Organic molecules are an integral part of our world - in us, around us and, importantly, in our medicines. Chemists design experiments to make specific molecules by mixing the appropriate chemicals. Often, however, the outcome can't be predicted. We are developing ways to accurately predict these outcomes using computer modelling of chemical reactions. This will allow us to better understand reactions and make molecules more efficiently. Such research is the basis for the development of new pharmaceuticals. Few people in Australia are working in this area and we expect to train four to six people during the course of this project.Read moreRead less

Nanotechnology, the art of molecular control, is often heralded as the next industrial revolution. For this to be realised, the construction of useful devices will require precise control at the molecular level. Our control is realised through a process called self-assembly which means that the once the components of the device are correctly designed, the device will simply be able to put itself together. This research will use nature's light harvesting elements, namely porphyrins, and our ability to precisely control their position with respect to each other to build new, more efficient solar cells.Read moreRead less

A diffractometer for small molecule structural elucidation by crystallographic analysis. X-ray diffractometry provides an unambiguous means of identifying the three-dimensional spatial arrangement of atoms within molecules affording important insights into the origins of chemical properties. A modern diffractometer will provide information to help develop new functional materials, therapeutic agents and environmentally sustainable processes.

This project includes the development of novel assignment techniques of 19F-labelled proteins, so that 19F-NMR can be used to detect specific binding interactions. One of the methods proposed here is designed to reveal structural information about the binding mode in solution with atomic detail. This knowledge can significantly accelerate drug development. It is otherwise only available from crystal structures that can not always be determined.Read moreRead less
