Learning to read and understand complex words. This project aims to study the development of morphological reading skills from kindergarten through to high school, providing insights into the full spectrum of abilities required to move from novice to expert reader. Over 80 per cent of English words comprise multiple morphemes, but how children learn to read such complex words is not well understood. Expected outcomes are a richer understanding of the predictors, developmental time-course, and mechanisms involved in the acquisition of morphological processes in reading. This project aims to understand when and why people attempt to regulate others' emotions, and to evaluate which regulation processes are most effective. We will study regulation attempts as they occur over minutes, days, and months in interactions between romantic couples and between nurse co-workers. Expecting the unexpected: how people prioritise predictability. This project aims to investigate how people represent and use information about unpredictability in their environment. Seeing too much predictability is problematic, but seeing too little can also be a problem, for example inappropriate "learned helplessness" can occur, whereby people feel disempowered because the world is seen as random. Recent findings demonstrated a bias in fundamental learning that may maintain these inappropria ....Expecting the unexpected: how people prioritise predictability. When animals or people learn that a cue, or their own action, is followed by something important, they respond in anticipation of the outcome or to control it. This project investigates how these learned responses can be reduced (“extinguished”) when the conditions that established them change. Oxytocin enhances the processing of environmental cues. Oxytocin is a powerful neuromodulator for social and emotional processing. Despite extensive research demonstrating pro-social and anxiolytic effects of oxytocin, the psychological processes that produce its effects are unknown. My hypothesis is that oxytocin enhances attention to cues that signal emotionally significant outcomes. This project will systematically assess the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying OT's effects using a ....Oxytocin enhances the processing of environmental cues. My hypothesis is that oxytocin enhances attention to cues that signal emotionally significant outcomes. This project will systematically assess the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying OT's effects using an associative learning framework through an innovative combination of Pavlovian conditioning, behavioural pharmacology, chemogenetic and transgenic methods.
