This is a time of enormous and rapid change in many areas of Australian business due to the introduction and widespread dissemination of digital media. It has resulted in the accumulation of large integrated databases of customer information and their transactions. Firms in all countries, particularly those challenged by distance and size, like Australia, are now seeking to find ways to make better use of their voluminous information so as to make efficiency gains in their business processes, strategic decision-making and customer relationship management. Our project aims to contribute to the ARC priority research goal of smart information use by developing new methodologies for the analysis of these large integrated databases.Read moreRead less

Changing the way that Australians enter the workforce: part-time working careers of young full-time school and tertiary students. As student-working is now the way in which most Australians enter the workforce it is essential to have a greater understanding of the phenomenon and assimilate it into the way that we think about jobs, careers and training. New careers theory of international significance will be developed from the findings. As student-working is now the way in which most Australians enter the workforce it is essential to have a greater understanding of the phenomenon and assimilate it into the way that we think about jobs, careers and training. New careers theory of international significance will be developed from the findings. Moreover, as most student jobs are in the service sector, student working has the potential to facilitate Australia's move to a more diverse economy and to develop a wider range of work-related skills. The project thus cuts across disciplinary boundaries to assist in strengthening Australia's social and economic fabric. Read moreRead less
Harnessing Business Insights from Unstructured Customer Data. Resulting from customers’ widespread uptake of online channels to buy and communicate has been a surge in online reviews and social media posts. This textual information offers a viable alternative to surveys that Australian businesses currently conduct to obtain customer insights. However, these reviews are unstructured and require substantial pre-processing to extract underlying customer perceptions. Therefore, this project aims to develop a novel machine learning approach to quantify the business-relevant information contained in textual information shared by customers online. This alternative approach will provide significant cost-saving benefits for a range of Australian companies, such as retailers, hotels, airlines and restaurants.Read moreRead less
Econometric Models for Marketing Decision Making. This project aims to develop methods to more efficiently allocate marketing resources across a range of media, including new media, such as the internet and social media, and compare them with with traditional media such as television and newspapers. To achieve this, the project will develop new methods and econometric models that employ data that capture both exposure to advertising media and downstream purchases at the individual-level. The expected outcome is that Australian companies will make more efficient use of their marketing budget, and better assess how to integrate new and old media into multimedia marketing communication campaigns.Read moreRead less
Innovative Use of Customer Data for Business Growth. This project aims to apply and adapt the latest machine learning techniques to enable companies to utilise their existing customer data to reveal purchase motivations, product preferences, and responsiveness to marketing communications for each single customer. This project aims to apply and adapt the latest machine learning techniques to enable companies to utilise their existing customer data to reveal purchase motivations, product preferences, and responsiveness to marketing communications for each single customer. A widespread practice in marketing is to partition customers into broad groups, but customers expect products and services that are tailored to their individual needs. This presents extreme challenges due to the size and complexity of customer databases. The expected outcomes will enable Australian companies to attract and retain more customers, and make more efficient use of their marketing budget. Benefits include equipping companies to better compete domestically and globally.Read moreRead less
Effects of Experiential Retail Strategies on Store Patronage and Consumer Purchase Behaviour. Recent years have seen an increased interest in industry and academia in what is known as 'experiential retail'. Not much is known however about what generates and determines a retail experience from the consumer's point of view and what are the short and long-term effects of such a strategy on consumer behaviour. Recent years have seen an increased interest in industry and academia in what is known as 'experiential retail'. Not much is known however about what generates and determines a retail experience from the consumer's point of view and what are the short and long-term effects of such a strategy on consumer behaviour. This study will examine these issues by way of a field experiment conducted in stores of PAINTRIGHT, a cooperative of specialist paint retailers. A survey approach will be complemented with extensive qualitative investigation to allow a better understanding and assessment of the effects of experiential retail strategies.Read moreRead less

Application Service Providers (ASPs) are one of the fastest growing classes of e-services and operate on the principle of renting software applications. This project aims to develop prediction techniques to estimate quality of service metrics for ASPs. The efficient prediction of the service levels that can be ensured is challenging given the dynamic nature of the Internet and the semantics of application metrics not being formally defined. The project will result in the development of a prototype system to support prediction of service levels. This system will be accessible to the Australian e-services industry via a web interface.Read moreRead less

Local government facilities have a social value for the community beyond the immediate provision of service or amenity. However, this aspect is not generally considered in the formal planning and management of public facilities, which concentrate on economic considerations and community service needs. This project explores the links between public assets, their social value and community well-being. The research will provide a rationale, model, and set of indicators to assess social value for facilities, assisting local government decision-making, including regional and rural communities, and contribute to the development of meaningful long-term infrastructure and community plans.Read moreRead less
