Summary
Pitcairn Island Language in the Diaspora. This project aims to expand knowledge of how different social environments affect language structure and use. It will analyse Pitkern, the Pitcairn Island language which is on the brink of extinction. It will supplement existing documentation of the language with that of its diaspora varieties in New Zealand and Australia. Shell valuables are fundamentally important in many Melanesian societies, linking people to each other, the land and their ancestors. Although shell artefacts are frequent in Melanesian archaeological sites, presently it is not possible to discriminate between types and levels of value. The newest nationalism: constructing a Hong Kong national identity. This project aims to investigate the emergence of a political movement promoting Hong Kong nationalism, transforming a seemingly depoliticised trade port into one of the most politically charged cities in the world. The project will use an ethnographic approach of close engagement with activists and their experiences to build on macro-level analyses of Hong Kong’s relationship with China and generate new knowledge of the persona ....The newest nationalism: constructing a Hong Kong national identity. One of archaeology's most significant contributions is providing models for the emergence of cultural diversity through time. Vanuatu is one of the most diverse regions on Earth. The southern islands were an important hub in early settlement and long-term inter-island interactions of Island Melanesia. Vanuatu is one of the most diverse regions on Earth. The southern islands were an important hub in early settlement and long-term inter-island interactions of Island Melanesia. Yet little is known about the origins of cultural contacts and diversity in the area. A major archaeological survey of the Polynesian outliers Futuna and Aniwa and neighbouring islands Tanna and Aneityum would greatly improve our knowledge of settlement patterns, long-distance exchange, and cross-cultural interaction in the region, from initial Lapita settlement 3000 years ago through to the arrival of Christian missionaries in the 1860s.Read moreRead less

A program of staff and postgraduate exchanges to build systematic research links between the Universities of Wollongong and Madras in the Humanities & Social Sciences.
