Biodiversity research is strong in Australia but is highly uncoordinated and, along with recent major breakthroughs in both theory and techniques, has highlighted the need for a Network to properly integrate research and focus it on the most appropriate scale. This Network aims to bring together a diverse spectrum of highly experienced and early career researchers to pool their ideas and expertise to allow them to determine how best to describe Australia's current biodiversity and the biological and environmental history leading up to the present. A major outcome will be the ability to predict the impacts of environmental change on biodiversity to assist management decisions across Australia, with lessons of global importance.Read moreRead less
Naracoorte caves: a critical window on faunal extinctions and past climates. This project aims to establish an unprecedented record of biodiversity and environmental change at Australia’s richest Quaternary fossil site – Naracoorte Caves. The study will integrate all aspects of the preserved deposits, employing new approaches in geochronology, palaeontology and geochemistry to develop truly comprehensive palaeoecological and palaeoclimate histories. This project will establish a benchmark datase ....Naracoorte caves: a critical window on faunal extinctions and past climates. This project will establish a benchmark dataset on past ecological and environmental change, strengthening scientific innovation in key research priority areas. It will have significant implications for understanding megafauna extinctions and past biodiversity responses, and will inform future conservation and climate change adaptation strategies. The project will transform the scientific profile of Naracoorte Caves, ensuring socioeconomic benefits to regional communities through education, ecotourism and knowledge marketing.Read moreRead less
Light islands in a sea of dark rainforest: Human influence on fire, climate and biodiversity in the Australian tropics. A key outcome will be an informed framework for protecting and enhancing biodiversity in the face of global warming. This research will build on previous archaeological and palaeoecological studies into plant processing practices; provide mediation between different approaches to rainforest management and further an understanding of the antiquity of rainforest occupation in the ....Light islands in a sea of dark rainforest: Human influence on fire, climate and biodiversity in the Australian tropics. A key outcome will be an informed framework for protecting and enhancing biodiversity in the face of global warming. This research will build on previous archaeological and palaeoecological studies into plant processing practices; provide mediation between different approaches to rainforest management and further an understanding of the antiquity of rainforest occupation in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Zone. Aboriginal communities see the collection of archaeological data as pivotal in gaining control over their cultural sites, which leads to partnerships between universities and communities. Furthermore, close institutional and community relationships have increased the flow of knowledge about past Indigenous rainforest management.Read moreRead less

High-resolution ITRAX XRF core scanning facility for global change research. This facility will enable researchers to obtain high-resolution geochemical profiles in the study of environmental change and climate variability. It will provide archive data on the variation of density and chemical element composition along sediment and soil cores, rock cores, wood samples, speleothems and corals. These archives contain important information such as human activity, climate variability, water quality c ....High-resolution ITRAX XRF core scanning facility for global change research. This facility will enable researchers to obtain high-resolution geochemical profiles in the study of environmental change and climate variability. It will provide archive data on the variation of density and chemical element composition along sediment and soil cores, rock cores, wood samples, speleothems and corals. These archives contain important information such as human activity, climate variability, water quality changes, pollution histories, recent geomorphological change, land-use change, introduction of invasive species and the occurrence of bushfires. A better understanding of the occurrence and timing of these major environmental issues is of national and regional importance.Read moreRead less
