Schools have low mathematics expectations for Indigenous students; low performance is blamed on their culture which is seen as primitive and instruction is reduced to repetitive rote learning of computation. There is evidence that Indigenous students could excel in mathematics if it is contextualised and taught from patterns and structure. A theory showing how Indigenous students can develop strong mathematical understandings would provide a counter to accepted wisdom of low performance and a model for future Indigenous student attainment. Making mathematics-based University disciplines a reality for Indigenous students will benefit individual students, their community and the economic future of Australia.Read moreRead less

The project focuses on strengthening Australia's social and economic fabric by developing new knowledge about effective ways to prepare young Australian Indigenous children for mathematics success in school. Low Indigenous mathematics performance is a national shame - many school leavers have limited employment and life chances. A theory that explains 2-4 years old Indigenous students' cognitive, affective and sociocultural development of the necessary number language and processes to ensure school entry with similar number knowledge and practices to same age non-Indigenous students has the potential to reduce unemployment and the reliance on welfare that has led to many of the social and health problems of Indigenous communities.Read moreRead less

This project will contribute to Australian social cohesion through the non-divisive Indigenous Knowledge approach to the teaching of Indigenous issues. Indigenous Knowledge Research is a new methodological development that will afford research in many cross-cultural contexts including those where literacy and numeracy skills are low. This research methodology has national and community significance because it fosters social cohesion in investigating problematic contexts through methods that bridge across groups and build community capacities to engage, identify and implement self-owned solutions. This research will facilitate the instigation of informational gathering structures in the most marginalized sectors of the Australian community.Read moreRead less
