Predicted climate changes can cause disastrous impacts on nation's human health, agriculture, infrastructure and natural ecosystems. The reduction of greenhouse emissions as required by Kyoto Protocol while protecting Australian industries and jobs is a massive challenge. The long-term sequestration of CO2 in deep geological formations is considered to be the most viable solution. This technology, however, is at its infancy and a concerted national research effort is urgently required. The multi-user Facility will enable closer collaboration with researchers in academia and industry, and will be integral in training the next generation of Australian scientists in the geological sequestration and wealth from the earth and the ocean.Read moreRead less

Sustainability, economy and safety in resource recovery require a high level of understanding of the mechanics of geomaterials in their natural conditions and a multidisciplinary approach to the geotechnical issues involved. This initiative aims to bridge gaps between geotechnical disciplines, to combine the testing, analytical skills and experience of the research groups and to incorporate expertise and ideas from the cognate disciplines of geology and geophysics so that innovative engineering practice will develop. This approach should achieve breakthroughs in understanding the behaviour of, and the safe economic extraction from deep resources including minerals, coal, gas drainage, petroleum and geothermal energy.Read moreRead less

Particle-scale modelling of particle-fluid flows in gas and oil extraction. This project aims to develop a particle scale model to study the pipeline transport of petroleum fluids. It will use a combined theoretical and experimental program, involving state-of-the-art discrete element modelling and simulation techniques, to describe the complex particle-fluid flow and erosion of pipeline transport in gas and oil extraction, quantify the effects of key variables, and formulate strategies for optimum process control under different conditions. The research outcomes are expected to be useful for the process control of pipeline transport in Australia’s important petroleum and energy-related industries.Read moreRead less

The project seeks to improve our understanding of the mechanics and physics of hydraulic fracturing in unconventional shale/tight gas reservoirs. By determining key aspects of the mechanics and physics of hydraulic fractures in naturally fractured unconventional reservoirs the project aims to build an accurate continuum hydro-mechanical model for hydraulic fracturing stimulation. The new computational approach and software is expected to improve our fundamental understanding of the underlying physics of initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures and their interactions with pre-existing natural faults. This has the potential to benefit the natural gas industry by providing information for better hydraulic fracture treatments and mitigation of the inherent risks of hydraulic fracturing and other processes.Read moreRead less

Quantifying the risk of groundwater contamination from hydraulic fracturing in coal seam gas operations in Australia. Concern for impacts to groundwater resources due to coal seam gas operations has led to heated debate in the community. Concern for impacts to groundwater resources due to coal seam gas operations has led to heated debate in the community. This project will assess the risk to groundwater contamination from fracking in coal seam gas operations. It is critical that naturally occurring compounds in the coal seam and injected compounds are not mobilised to aquifers topped by water bores. This project will build accurate, site-specific, dynamic numerical models of the hydraulic-fracturing process in coal seam gas operations. This will enable prediction of the maximum vertical extent of stimulated fractures in specific coal seams and will help establish criteria for when and where fracking in coal seam gas wells is safe in relation to groundwater contamination.Read moreRead less

Summary
Safe long-term storage of carbon dioxide in coal seams with enhanced methane recovery. Climate change is upon us due to increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. The capture and storage of CO2 emission in un-minable coal seams is an effective way to combat this. This projects aims to discover optimum measures to store CO2 in deep coal seams using enhanced coal-bed methane recovery.

Hydrocarbon production and exploration today support viable economies. The engagement of industry with higher learning institutions will advance and enhance the discipline of petroleum geology, with a resultant spectrum from new sources of oil and gas to significantly reducing CO2 emissions (and decreasing the impact of global warming). National and community benefits are diverse: training and research support for many graduate students and staff in Australia, a better understanding of ancient greenhouse climates, testing and refinement of new techniques (e.g. bioevents, biosteering) in petroleum studies and practical experience of integrating data from frontier exploration wells.Read moreRead less
