A VAST potential for ion channel drug discovery. The purpose of this project is to bring innovation into the methods used for identifying and characterising novel carbohydrate-based compounds acting at ion channels. These molecules will have high potential to be developed as highly effective treatments for pain without the unpleasant side-effects associated with current treatments.
Efficacy profiling innovation in novel pain therapeutics discovery. The purpose of this project is to bring innovation into the methods used for selecting novel compounds with high potential for progression into development as highly effective pain-killers for improving the relief of chronic pain. This will result in new pain-killers that are highly effective without producing unpleasant side-effects.

The ARC Training Centre for the Development of Tools for Fragment Based Design aims to inspire the next generation of drug discovery research leaders. It plans to provide direct experience with industry partners, training and master classes in early stage drug-discovery from industry experts. The Centre is expected to accelerate research translation and industry engagement by providing an efficient strategy for the screening of a biological target and early medicinal chemistry for optimisation. The expected outcome of the Centre is to equip the trainees with the skills to make key contributions to the sustainability and growth of the sector and to provide significant capacity to address global challenges for 21st century pharmaceutical innovation.Read moreRead less
Development of Liposaccharide Peptide Conjugates for Peptide Drug Delivery. We aim to adapt the Solid Phase Oligosaccharide Synthesis technology patented by Alchemia to develop methodologies that will allow the assembly of sugar, lipid and peptide units on a single solid phase resin. Complexation of a drug with lipid and/or sugar units represents one of the most important of the strategies being investigated in this burgeoning field. Increasing the lipid solubility of a hydrophilic compound has been established as an important factor in improving its absorption as it is necessary for passive transport across intestinal mucosal membranes. The role of sugar unit is very important: (i) it modifies the physico-chemical properties (solubility), (ii) utilizes active transport systems (e.g. Glucose transport) and (iii) target the compound - "MAGIC BULET" (Lewis X analogues - damaged cells). There is no limit to the areas of medicine and public health that would benefit from revolutionary new technology in these areas.Read moreRead less
Targeting virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by inhibiting oxidative protein folding. Our research will lead to the development of compounds with a novel anti-virulence/antibacterial mode of action for further drug development.

It is estimated that chronic pain affects one in five individuals in the general community in Australia and worldwide, with prevalence rates correlated directly with advancing age. Chronic pain not only adversely affects the quality of life of individuals but it also places a large economic burden on our healthcare system. Development and validation of an in vitro method to successfully identify novel morphine-like strong analgesics with a reduced propensity for producing respiratory depression or constipation, has the potential to not only improve pain management for individuals and to reduce the economic burden of chronic pain on the Australian healthcare system, but it is also likely to produce direct economic benefits to our nation. New drugs to treat T. cruzi infection are urgently needed, however their design has been hampered by an incomplete understanding of complex host-parasite interactions, inadequate in vitro and in vivo tools to rigorously define activity during drug discovery, and a poor appreciation of concentration/effect relationships. This project aims to develop new and much needed in vitro methods to better define the kinetic and dynamic activity of new drug candidates, and will provide a rational basis for translating this information into lengthy animal models of T. cruzi infection. The outcome aims to be rationally designed drug candidates that are available in a shorter period of time and are suitable for further development.Read moreRead less

This project builds on areas of research strength in Australia (nanotechnology and biotechnology/biomaterials) and will add considerably to the expanding Australian expertise-base in dendrimer technology (in which it is a world leader). The project will advance the fundamental science base that underpins dendrimer design and has the potential to deliver substantial benefits in improved drug delivery and therefore health outcomes for Australia. The interdisciplinary nature of this project will also result in a unique training program for the researchers involved. Such experience is in great demand in Australia where the developing biotechnology and nanotechnology industry is critically short of scientists with skills in drug delivery.Read moreRead less
