Wildlife and ecological resources such as Phillip Island's Little Penguin colony (with 500,000 visitors p.a.) and its environment are at the heart of Australia's ecotourism industry. If properly managed, such resources make significant contributions to the economy and can provide diverse employment opportunities for local communities. They also increase awareness of, and sensitivity to, environmental issues in general. Developing and implementing new and improved techniques for the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled wildlife and for the remediation of contaminated foreshore, apart from its inherent value, will contribute to the sustainability of such resources both at the national and international level. Lasers are indispensable tools for the characterization and photochemical modification of molecular systems. Powerful lasers produce intense bursts of light across the electromagnetic spectrum, from the infrared to the ultraviolet. This versatility allows chemists to observe the dynamical behaviour of single molecules on ultra-fast timescales, to probe the shape of molecules relevant to the action of therapeutic drugs, to explore the characteristics of molecules found in space, and to initiate laser-activated chemical processes in microscopic dimensions to modify sensor surfaces. The proposed laser facility will enable progress in these areas and will help maintain Australia's research edge in nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Surfaces such as those presented by an air-liquid interface or air-borne nanoparticles exert significant effects on protein aggregation in biological environments. We will develop a comprehensive theoretical and experimental approach to study the effects of such surfaces on the self assembly of proteins leading to disease causing amyloid fibrils. This will provide a molecular level understanding of protein self-association and a rational basis for the design of inhibitors to stop protein aggregation. The work will also establish design principles for new nanomaterials via the controlled self assembly of proteins on surfaces.Read moreRead less

Recycling and waste management are of ever increasing concern in today's consumer society and our capacity to recycle waste is directly reliant on our ability to lower contamination levels and ensure consumer safety. Using novel analytical techniques, this project aims to characterise contaminants found in recycled PET and identify the source(s) of this contamination. Ultimately this will lead to a reduction in recycled PET contamination levels, and allow a more complete recycling process. The global objective being to generate enough relevant scientific data to assist Visy in its endeavours to achieve higher levels of environmental performances and sustainable product development.Read moreRead less

Complex fluids are composed of polymers and nano-particles in solution. Under flow these fluids may undergo dramatic molecular and nano-particle orientational and spatial ordering that give rise to a fascinating range of rheological behaviour. This project will use state of the art fluorescence spectroscopy which is able to resolve the orientation of single molecules combined with novel rheo-optic methods to characterise flow induced ordering in these fluids. The flow induced orientation, spatial distribution and nano-particle/macromolecule interactions will be quantified. Theoretical deficiencies in describing complex fluid flow will be reconciled. The experimental insight gained will be exploited to produce novel molecularly ordered materials.
