Pattern formation of precursor films: a new mathematical model. This project aims to develop a new mathematical model to predict the pattern formation of a new class of permanent lubricants. Ionic liquids are conductive and do not evaporate, creating a unique opportunity to develop such coatings. These thin films form patterns where the pattern type (patches, stripes or holes) depends on the liquid/surface interaction. Only some patterns result in good lubrication; current limited understanding ....Pattern formation of precursor films: a new mathematical model. Only some patterns result in good lubrication; current limited understanding of the pattern formation process hampers selection of a good lubricant for a chosen material. Current mathematical approaches are computationally expensive and time consuming. The new model expected from this project would provide a cheap, fast and reliable alternative for screening suitable liquid/surface pairs.Read moreRead less

Networked structures are everywhere and modern societies largely depend on their proper functioning. Some of these networks are spatial with each node having a geographical tag. Examples include power grids, the internet and transportation networks. These networks are often interdependent where their functioning depends on each other. This project will establish a mathematical framework to efficiently observe and control interdependent spatial networks and develop design strategies in order to maximise residency of spatial networks against catastrophic failures in their components. The outcomes of the project will protect the Australian power grid and transportation networks against random and intentional failures. Read moreRead less

Development of mathematical and statistical methods and tools in bioinformation science will ensure that Australia is at the cutting-edge of modern biology. This will enhance Australia's reputation for dealing with the exponentially growing body of genomic data emerging from life sciences laboratories throughout the world. The proposed project has a broad range of potential applications in biotechnology, particularly in the medical and agricultural industries. Examples include improvements to livestock, in plant breeding such as drought resistance, and better genetic disease diagnosis, including earlier cancer diagnosis, and personalised treatment.Read moreRead less
Operations research without convexity. Operations Research (OR) is one of the most applicable areas of mathematics and of importance for the future of technologically advanced Australia. Operations Research (OR) is one of the most applicable areas of mathematics and of importance for the future of technologically advanced Australia. However, applications of OR often require convexity. This is a serious limitation. A new approach, monotonic analysis, which is applicable to a broad class of nonconvex problems, was given birth by the CI. Promising results have been obtained and leading researchers around the world (including the Presidents of the Canadian Mathematical and French Applied Mathematics Societies) are keen to work with the CI developing this topic. This project both cements and extends world leadership in this field.Read moreRead less
Mathematical model reduction for complex networks. This project aims to develop new mathematical methodology to describe the collective behaviour of large networks of oscillators with parameters called collective coordinates. This will allow for the quantitative description of finite-size networks as well as chaotic dynamics, which are both out of reach for current model reduction methods. This project aims to develop new mathematical methodology to describe the collective behaviour of large networks of oscillators with parameters called collective coordinates. This will allow for the quantitative description of finite-size networks as well as chaotic dynamics, which are both out of reach for current model reduction methods. The project will apply methodology to understand the causes of, and ways to prevent, glitches and failure in the emerging modern decentralised power grids. This will develop a framework to address this question, tailored to deal with the hitherto uncharted case of finite-size networks.Read moreRead less
New mathematics to improve understanding of anomalously diffusing reactions. Standard mathematical models for particles that diffuse and react are based on assumptions that improving technologies have revealed do not always hold. This project aims to create a mathematical framework that generalises existing approaches, taking into account observations of complicated transport behaviour at many scales, and including the impact of this anomalous transport on reactions. The development of the fram ....New mathematics to improve understanding of anomalously diffusing reactions. The development of the framework will involve innovative approaches utilising mathematical techniques, including dynamical systems, fractional calculus, and stochastic processes. This project aims to deliver new mathematical models that can be adopted in applications across different discipline areas, and especially in biological systems. Read moreRead less

International collaboration and networking is a key feature that will enhance Australia's scientific standing and provide opportunities for early career researchers to engage internationally with world leaders. The maintenance of a high quality research program at ANU enhances Australia's ability to attract international students and places the ANU in the top league of world universities. It brings with it recognition of Australia as a culturally advanced nation.Read moreRead less
Decentralized Control Problems for Networked Systems. The conceptual advances to be made in the area decentralized control of networked systems.
New design rules for decentralized control in networked systems will be developed and published in the top international journals and major international conferences.
Also, a contribution of the project will be to produce high quality Ph.D. graduates in this area of control theory.
