Nitrogen characteristics of plant communities along the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT). It has become evident that biosphere processes need to be addressed at a global scale to understand global changes. Continental transects analyse ecosystem processes in a global context. The North Australian Tropical Transect (Darwin to Tennant Creek) represents 25% of Australia's vegetation. Biogeological research is underway on NATT ecosystems. Nitrogen availability strongly affects ecosystem productivity, and is of major interest as nitrogen pollution threatens the biosphere. In Australia, nitrogen levels are generally low, but overall knowledge is limited. An integrated ecophysiological approach will relate soil and plant nitrogen characteristics, and provide an analysis of nitrogen relations along NATT. Results will be linked to existing NATT and international transect research.Read moreRead less
How does the interaction between environmental drivers determine the impact of global change on animals? There is an urgent need to determine how vulnerable natural populations are to simultaneous changes in more than one environmental driver. There is an urgent need to determine how vulnerable natural populations are to simultaneous changes in more than one environmental driver. This project will take an integrative approach, using molecular, physiological and ecological tools, to determine whether cellular responses to the interaction between UV-B radiation and temperature vary between populations, and within individuals over time. This project will bridge the gap between physiology and ecology by testing whether molecular responses translate into fitness benefits for the organism to gain an understanding at a level that is relevant for conservation. The role of algal endosymbionts in acclimation and adaptation of reef corals to climate change. Understanding the potential of symbiotic zooxanthellae to enhance the thermal tolerance of reef corals addresses our first national Research Priority Goal aimed at the sustainable use of Australia's biodiversity. Understanding the potential of symbiotic zooxanthellae to enhance the thermal tolerance of reef corals addresses our first national Research Priority Goal aimed at the sustainable use of Australia's biodiversity. Given current trends in global warming, such knowledge is critical to underpinning the long-term management of the Great Barrier Reef, which has significant political and socio-economic importance on local, state, national and global scales for services ranging from fisheries to ecotourism. Understanding the potential for corals to form associations with different genetic types of zooxanthellae will significantly advance current knowledge of the likelihood that animals can adapt to climate change.Read moreRead less
