This project aims to develop next generation click chemistry as an enabling synthetic technology for creating functional molecules. Click-philosophy, that 'all searches must be restricted to molecules that are easy to make', is a key requirement for rapid discovery of useful functional materials, medicines and molecular tools. Click linkers make this possible, and the project will develop a new range of asymmetric 3D-Connectors based upon readily available, yet unexplored main group gasses, and will demonstrate their usefulness in several applications including the synthesis of new polymers. The project will also develop the first general asymmetric Click reaction, which will have significant impact in biological applications and materials science. This project will result in the development of new synthetic chemistry technology that will have a global impact, which will add value to the knowledge economy of Australia and contribute skills and training to the next generation of Australian scientists.Read moreRead less

Enantioselective catalysis using P-chiral phosphines and phosphinamines. This project aims to develop new methods to synthesise organic molecules. The synthesis of organic molecules for medicines, polymers and other applications depends on the use of catalysts to promote chemical reactions. The use of small organic catalysts, rather than those based on transition metals or enzymes, offers many advantages in the form of low toxicity, low cost, ease of use and minimal environmental impact. The use of small organic catalysts, rather than those based on transition metals or enzymes, offers many advantages in the form of low toxicity, low cost, ease of use and minimal environmental impact. This project aims to deliver new methods for synthesis using new approaches in organocatalysis. The methods will be used to synthesise important molecules, including novel catalysts, biocompatible polyester materials and chiral phosphines, which are widely used in chemical industry but difficult and expensive to produce.Read moreRead less
Pioneering new oxidation catalysis paradigms for organic synthesis. The project aims to deliver highly novel chemical reactions based on previously unforeseen catalyst attributes, The societal impact of catalyst-promoted chemical reactions can be measured by the enormous volume of manufactured goods (egĀ plastics, pharmaceuticals) based on this technology. Expected project outcomes could be transferred into commercial chemical research and development programs.
Generation and exploitation of novel fermentation products in the synthesis of biologically active organic compounds with therapeutic potential. Collections of new micro-organisms and their metabolites suitable for use in the synthesis of potential therapeutic agents will be established. The combined application of molecular biological, microbiological and chemical synthesis techniques in a concerted manner in the one location will lead to major new opportunities for Australian industry.

This project aims to establish design principles for the manufacture of polymers made from sulfur, an abundant yet underused building block. These novel materials will be tested as next-generation rubber and plastic. This project expects to generate new knowledge in how these materials can be assembled and recycled, and also how they can be used to extract valuable gold from ore and e-waste. Anticipated outcomes of the project include access to entirely new materials useful in sustainable plastic manufacturing and sustainable gold extraction. These outcomes should provide significant benefits including functional replacements for non-recyclable plastics and elimination of toxic mercury and cyanide in gold mining and e-waste processing.Read moreRead less
Boron and silicon based pincer ligands for environmentally responsible catalysis. The production of everyday chemicals (pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers) comes at a price, economic and environmental. Metal catalysts significantly reduce the environmental impact of both the associated energy requirements and waste products. New classes of catalysts will be developed based on the unconventional elements boron and silicon.
