Summary
The way the built environment is planned and designed has a pervasive influence on health but how to translate that evidence into policy and practice is under-researched. Recent developments in NSW provide the opportunity to investigate how health is included across the business of a land-use planning system. This translational research uses a realist approach and policy analysis to unpack the influences on health being included (or not) at multiple levels of the system.

Summary
This project examines the characteristics of Australian research and researchers whose work is judged to be influential in influencing public health policy in 6 areas: tobacco control, cancer screening, injury prevention, cardiovascular disease prevention, illicit drugs and alcohol control. The project involves work with both researchers and those who are in positions to advocate and enact policy (politicians, government officials, journalists, public health agencies).
In Australia 2 in 3 adults live with overweight or obesity and unhealthy diet is the major modifiable contributor to death and disability. We know that retail marketing strategies like food product packaging, pricing and other promotions have a major impact on what we choose to buy and eat. My research program aims to build the novel evidence required to implement effective strategies to improve the healthiness of food provision at scale.
The impact of small business policy systems on small firm innovation and competitiveness in critical industry sectors. This research will examine the proposition that small business policy systems affect the structure and strategy of SMEs and in turn the sectors within which SMEs innovate and specialise. It will involve an analysis of SME policy systems; sectors of SME specialisation based on patent data, annual reports and firm web sites; and a longitudinal study of the strategy and structure o ....The impact of small business policy systems on small firm innovation and competitiveness in critical industry sectors. The collaboration will facilitate transfer of research value mapping (RVM) methods and technologies from a leading US centre into Australia. The RVM program focus on university-business collaboration will orient future collaborative projects and analyses. This will enhance the state-of-the-art of research evaluation in Australia over time. I lead an internationally recognised research program that examines how governments can best respond to alcohol and illegal drugs – a significant health and social problem in Australia. My research generates new evidence to inform drug policy and I study how to translate research into meaningful information that governments can use. My aim is to improve how Australia responds; reducing the community harms and improving the health of those affected by alcohol and drugs.
A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria. This is a longitudinal panel study of the homeless in urban and rural Victoria; it will interview residents of transitional housing over two years, analysing factors that contribute to success or failure in achieving housing stability. The research starts from the assumption that homelessness is not simply a condition of being without shelter at a specific point in time, but is a situation of chronic housing instability. ....A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria.
