This research addresses a novel and potentially critical factor in support for social change, beliefs about society in the future, that helps build Australia's capacity to effectively address important social issues that depend on widespread support and action, such as climate change. The research provides a basis for a more informed public debate about these issues, and enhances the effectiveness of policy-makers and information campaigns. Scientifically, it enhances Australia's reputation as a leader in social change research. Read moreRead less
Concepts and Conceptual Change. Aim: To develop a new theory of conceptual change that explains how a concept can change considerably, while still remaining in a crucial sense the very same concept.
Significance: All areas of philosophy need to solve this problem so as to distinguish between real and merely verbal disputes. There is no adequate solution to this long standing problem.

Moral Responsibility and Cognitive Science: Agency, Empathy and Theory of Mind. Moral responsibility has two components: being responsible for one's actions (moral agency), and holding others responsible for their actions (moral ascription). The aim of this project is to develop empirically informed and philosophically sophisticated models of moral agency and moral ascription. We will do this by drawing on recent research on agency and moral cognition within cognitive science. The aim of this project is to develop empirically informed and philosophically sophisticated models of moral agency and moral ascription. We will do this by drawing on recent research on agency and moral cognition within cognitive science. An adequate model of moral responsibility has significant intellectual value and may lead to new methods for treating anti-social behavior. Read moreRead less
Transforming attitudes into action through identification under uncertainty. Basic and applied research are articulated with social practice and policy to develop new knowledge about the social psychology of societal innovation and social change. How, and under what conditions, can leaders and active minorities mobilise people to act in accordance with attitudes that accommodate changed circumstances? Basic and applied research are articulated with social practice and policy to develop new knowledge about the social psychology of societal innovation and social change. How, and under what conditions, can leaders and active minorities mobilise people to act in accordance with attitudes that accommodate changed circumstances? Our analysis integrates research on uncertainty, minority influence, and leadership, within the perspective of social identity theory and new attitude-behaviour relations research. This innovative integration significantly advances basic theory, and concretely addresses social change regarding cultural relations and immigration, sustainable natural resource management, healthy living, national economic activities, and business and organizational practices.

Complex networked social systems. A recurring contemporary theme across many social science disciplines is the significant role of social networks in shaping the course of interpersonal interactions and their cascading social consequences. The aim of this Initiative is to build a multi- disciplinary Research Network spanning the social and mathematical sciences that can develop a new interdisciplinary science of networks and network-based social processes. The Network's aims will be twofold: first, an interactive and accessible state-of-the-art research capacity in theory, methods and models for network processes; and, second, the capacity to apply new forms of network understanding to the design and evaluation of innovative intervention strategies for system-level community change.Read moreRead less
The politics of opinion: Individuals, groups, and the social psychology of opinion in the public sphere. Public opinion is crucial to democratic theory and practice, but its extensive multi-disciplinary literature is littered with contested definitions. One major (and heated) debate concerns whether public opinion should, in principle, comprise the views of individuals, as aggregated in polls, or of groups, as expressed through collective statements and action. This project examines public opinion in reality rather than in principle, using social psychology to predict that individuated and group-based representations serve distinct purposes for specific social actors under specific social and political conditions. It offers new answers to longstanding questions about the role of citizen opinion in democratic politics.Read moreRead less
Using eye movements to study how past experiences shape expectations. We intend to examine how the brain decides where to look next with our eyes, a decision made approximately three times every second. Understanding how the normal brain makes decisions will in turn help us to understand what happens when things go wrong in diseases like dementia and Parkinson's disease, with the hope of better - and earlier - diagnosis, and improved monitoring of treatment. Understanding how the normal brain makes decisions will in turn help us to understand what happens when things go wrong in diseases like dementia and Parkinson's disease, with the hope of better - and earlier - diagnosis, and improved monitoring of treatment. In addition, our research will establish an important research link with The University of Cambridge, and allow Australia to be competitive with laboratories in North America and Europe that are currently studying how the brain makes decisions about where to look.Read moreRead less

Australia is a world leader in computational cognitive science, particularly with respect to language processing. This project will help maintain and extend this position. Insights from the project will help us understand the processes that underlie both normal reading and reading disorders, particularly in areas that are comparatively neglected yet extremely important, such as how people read words of more than one syllable. Given that everyone in Australian needs to learn to read and that acquired and developmental disorders of reading are common, providing the theoretical base on which the processes involved in reading can be understood (and hence learnt and remediated most effectively) is of utmost importance.Read moreRead less
Rising Intonation in Australian English. The project will model the intonation of Australian English through an analysis of spoken dialogues from over 200 speakers. The study of the different types of rising intonation across different population groups will advance our knowledge of how Australian English is different from other accents, how it has changed in the last 40 years, and how accent is related to social class in Australia. The outcomes include publications on the theory of intonation, ....Rising Intonation in Australian English. The study of the different types of rising intonation across different population groups will advance our knowledge of how Australian English is different from other accents, how it has changed in the last 40 years, and how accent is related to social class in Australia. The outcomes include publications on the theory of intonation, accent change, and its relationship to social class as well as a working model of intonation that can be implemented in a system for synthesising Australian English speech.Read moreRead less
Human Decision-Making Processes and Outcomes in the Oil and Gas Industry. A new theoretical framework, including a new Decision Taxonomy and the development of a new measure of decision quality, will be used to underpin a study of decision processes and outcomes in the oil & gas industry, and to explore the relationship between them. Processes and outcomes will be evaluated in both a controlled laboratory setting that replicates the characteristics of real decision environments, and by analysing ....Human Decision-Making Processes and Outcomes in the Oil and Gas Industry. A new theoretical framework, including a new Decision Taxonomy and the development of a new measure of decision quality, will be used to underpin a study of decision processes and outcomes in the oil & gas industry, and to explore the relationship between them. Processes and outcomes will be evaluated in both a controlled laboratory setting that replicates the characteristics of real decision environments, and by analysing actual historical decisions made in oil & gas and other industrial settings. If successful the results will ultimately lead to the safe, responsible and optimal performance of the oil & gas industry in particular, and for other industries with similar characteristics.
