The religious factor and trends in civil society under conditions of globalisation in Australia, the U.S.A. and Brazil. This project explores a supposed chain of connections between globalisation, rapid religious change, the fragmentation of civil society, and a consequent weakening of democracy. Through comparative analysis, a counter claim will be investigated: that certain types of religious associations flourishing under conditions of globalisation in the three countries examined are importa ....The religious factor and trends in civil society under conditions of globalisation in Australia, the U.S.A. and Brazil. This project explores a supposed chain of connections between globalisation, rapid religious change, the fragmentation of civil society, and a consequent weakening of democracy. Through comparative analysis, a counter claim will be investigated: that certain types of religious associations flourishing under conditions of globalisation in the three countries examined are important elements in the regeneration of disturbed civil societies. The focus is on Australia, but a novel comparative analysis will help determine whether current fears about social fragmentation in Australia are justified. Youth civic participation and social connection in post-industrial society: a comparative analysis. The project generates important new knowledge about youth civic participation and will develop more effective indicators for contemporary meanings of citizenship and connection that are relevant to young people today. It will make a direct contribution to youth, education and welfare policies on issues of youth participation and connection, helping to shape a timely and responsive approach on the ....Youth civic participation and social connection in post-industrial society: a comparative analysis. The project generates important new knowledge about youth civic participation and will develop more effective indicators for contemporary meanings of citizenship and connection that are relevant to young people today. It will make a direct contribution to youth, education and welfare policies on issues of youth participation and connection, helping to shape a timely and responsive approach on the part of policy makers, service providers and programme designers. Violence at the Intersections of Globalism, Nationalism and Tribalism. This cross-disciplinary study investigates recent arenas of violence, from the genocide in Rwanda to ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, militia activities in East Timor and the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. First, it examines Western public representations of these arenas. This project examines the nature and impact of political and economic agency among African migrants in Australia, using mixed methods (survey, interviews, media and policy analysis). With the right policy settings, African migrants and Australian communities stand to benefit enormously from projected African population growth. However, due to a two decade research focus on African refugees, little is known about the successful navigatio ....The Political and Economic Agency of Africans in Australia. This project examines the nature and impact of political and economic agency among African migrants in Australia, using mixed methods (survey, interviews, media and policy analysis). With the right policy settings, African migrants and Australian communities stand to benefit enormously from projected African population growth. However, due to a two decade research focus on African refugees, little is known about the successful navigation of political and economic life among the wider African diaspora. This project will generate new knowledge offering a blueprint for such policy settings. Complex networked social systems. A recurring contemporary theme across many social science disciplines is the significant role of social networks in shaping the course of interpersonal interactions and their cascading social consequences. The aim of this Initiative is to build a multi- disciplinary Research Network spanning the social and mathematical sciences that can develop a new interdisciplinary science of networks and network-based social processes. Social futures and life pathways of young people in Queensland: waves 4 and 5 of a longitudinal study. This project assesses the impact of globalisation on the attitudes, behaviors, and life pathways of a cohort of over 7000 young Queenslanders, first surveyed when they were aged 12 and 13. Participants will be followed up when they are aged 19 and 20 and 20/21 to examine their experiences of the transition from school to work, family and social life.
Business collective action, networks and discourse: a fiscal sociology of mining tax reform in Australia. The mining tax revolt in 2010 was a landmark event in government-business relations in Australia, acknowledged by multinational corporations and governments around the world for its broader ramifications. This project is the first systematic study of what happened, and its implications for our understanding of government-business relations.
The Circulation of Nonviolence: Gandhi and the History of Global Politics. Global protest movements have become a feature of recent campaigns against war and corporate power. The diffusion of protest across national boundaries disrupts official routine, threatens state power, and raises new questions about global citizenship. However, the history, dynamics and novelty of transnational diffusion is still only dimly understood. This project will address such absences.
