Despite widespread calls for cultural change to enable Australia to craft an environmentally sustainable future, the nation lacks systematic investment in cultural environmental research. This proposal will establish a critical mass of internationally competitive researchers in the cultural dimensions of environmental sustainability and human-environment interactions, including climate change. This will facilitate more effective multidisciplinary research across the natural science/social science divide and improve the relevance of environmental policies. Our ethnographic and related research methods will strengthen community capacity to respond to and shape the complex interactions of environmental and social change ahead.Read moreRead less

Natural environments are rapidly changing due to climate and human population pressure, affecting food supply and natural heritage. Insects and other invertebrates perform essential services like pollination, pest control and soil turnover, and provide food for wildlife. These services are under threat, and ways of maintaining them and protecting biodiversity need to be developed. This project will identify the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms that insects use to deal with environmental changes and the processes that promote evolutionary resilience to safeguard environmental services. This should lead to guidelines for sustainable agricultural production and biodiversity protection in threatened environments like the Australian Alps.Read moreRead less

This project aims to exploit the availability of Big Data from the genomics revolution to understand the relationship between the genome, the environment and complex human traits. New statistical methods and user-friendly software tools will be developed and applied to datasets on millions of individuals to generate new knowledge on human life history variation and healthy ageing. This project will position Australia to benefit from rapid advances in genomic technologies, to build and sustain critical capacity in statistical genetics, and better understand the causes and consequence of individual differences in human traits from genetic and environmental factors across the entire human lifespan.Read moreRead less

Law for the public's health: the impact of medico-legal institutions on public health. Medico-legal agencies, like complaints commissions and coroners, focus on helping families in distress 'pick up the pieces'. Through a series of partnerships this project will use public health research to help transform their roles.

Neural and behavioural evidence for children’s learning of grammatical morphology. Children with various types of language delay have problems learning grammatical structure, leading to communicative breakdown. This project will use brain imaging and behavioural methods to understand better the nature of these problems, leading to more effective intervention, better child health and wellbeing, and improved educational outcomes.

Sexual conflict and evolutionary dynamics of insecticide resistance genes. This project aims to develop new approaches to mitigate resistance evolution by applying sexual selection theory to predict evolution of insecticide resistance in flies. This project aims to develop new approaches to mitigate resistance evolution by applying sexual selection theory to predict evolution of insecticide resistance in flies. A key assumption of current agriculture management strategies is that resistance carries fecundity or survival costs, but this is rarely demonstrated, especially in nature. Not all resistance mutations are novel; many represent pre-existing variants maintained by balancing selection i.e. opposing effects in males and females, or by environmental fluctuations. This research will provide new insight into how resistance evolves and is maintained in natural populations and may result in potential reduction in pesticide use with associated economic and biodiversity benefits. This project aims to determine the effects of changing environments on wild animal populations across Australia. By combining recent advances in genomic technology with a consortium of fourteen long-term studies of mammals, birds and reptiles, it aims to quantify the genetic basis of life-history variation and the potential for evolutionary adaptation in the wild. The project will generate a comprehensive understanding of the genetic consequences of environmental change, population decline, inbreeding and disease in natural environments. The expected benefits include a coordinated network for long-term wild animal studies in Australia, advanced quantitative skills training, and knowledge transfer for wildlife management and conservation.Read moreRead less

This project covers all four national priority areas. Nature abounds with conflicts between what is good for the individual or a larger entity (a population, a society, or a species). Researching them will explain why populations adapt or fail to adapt to novel conditions (e.g., climate change) and predict when interventions are beneficial. Similar rules govern the spread of invasive species. Even health problems, e.g., new virulent strains of human, animal or plant diseases, require such evolutionary thinking. Cutting-edge mathematical tools also prepare Australians for an era in the near future where genomic data are so cheap to acquire that training in complex mathematical and logical analysis becomes a factor limiting scientific progress.Read moreRead less

This project will bring innovative science and Indigenous knowledge together to develop new understandings of the 60,000 year custodianship of Australian deserts. The archaeology will focus on the Ningaloo coast, Pilbara and Western Desert. This region is experiencing expansion in resource extraction, energy production and tourism, key to Australia's post-COVID recovery. This globally significant human record is poorly documented and at risk, as seen in the recent loss of Juukan Caves. The Desert People programme will work with Traditional Owners and use novel techniques to document places of the highest value for their management and protection. This will result in vastly improved planning outcomes and underwrite new regional economies. Read moreRead less

Learning how to tackle new challenges is more important today than ever before, yet learning is also becoming much more complicated. This project will investigate better ways of supporting people in learning what they need to learn. It will provide ways of analysing and improving the increasingly complex systems in which learning takes place, especially those where computer technology plays a strong role. This project will focus on networked learning - where people learn through collaboration that is wholly or partially online. It will explain how better tools and resources for networked learning can be designed, and how everyone can play a significant role in improving how, where and what they learn.Read moreRead less
