The Centre For Research In Childhood Early Respiratory Disease
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,621,023.00
Summary
The Centre for Research in Childhood Early Respiratory Disease is dedicated to the prevention of lung disease in young children with chronic respiratory disease. We aim to better understand the process of lung disease to identify predictors of disease and to treat it better. We will investigate the psychosocial effects of early interventions to better manage families. We will facilitate collaborations to provide best practice guidance and will train the next generation of doctors and researchers
Centre Of Research Excellence On Sitting Time And Chronic Disease Prevention – Mechanisms, Measurement And Interventions
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,657,874.00
Summary
Australian research has identified serious health consequences arising from the 7 to 10 hours of daily sitting that most people do, especially in relation to ‘diseases of inactivity’ – type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and breast and colon cancer – that are an unwelcome burden on individuals, families and health systems. This new research examines the practical feasibility and the preventive-health benefits of changing children’s and adults’ sitting time in schools, workplaces and the home ....Australian research has identified serious health consequences arising from the 7 to 10 hours of daily sitting that most people do, especially in relation to ‘diseases of inactivity’ – type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and breast and colon cancer – that are an unwelcome burden on individuals, families and health systems. The control of epidemics requires cross-sectoral engagement across various fields such as health, government, international law and security, at both national and international levels. The changing global landscape poses an increased threat to biosecurity, calling for cross-sectoral collaborative research and engagement. Integrated Systems for Epidemic Response (ISER) will convene and lead multidisciplinary systems research in epidemic response.
This CRE aims to build a world-leading, multi-disciplinary research team that aims to have a real impact on finding and implementing policy solutions to the global obesity epidemic. It will support policy makers and public health advocates to create potent and sustained policy change by evaluating potential policy options and their impacts on environments and systems, enhancing policy development and implementation processes, and monitoring the actions of the public and private sectors.
A Centre For Research Excellence To Transform Outcomes Of Critically Ill Patients In ICU (CRE-ICU)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,500,000.00
Summary
Patients who are admitted to intensive care (ICU) and require mechanical ventilation for life support account for 63,000 ICU admissions and 8,190 deaths each year in Australia, higher than the national road toll. CRE-ICU will transform outcomes for these patients by using data within registries and electronic medical records to perform high-impact, low cost clinical trials, generating new knowledge to inform national guidelines and policies and training the next generation of researchers.
Centre For REdefining Antibiotic Use To ReDUce ResistanCE And Prolong The Lives Of Antibiotics (REDUCE)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,158,296.00
Summary
Ineffective dosing of antimicrobials has contributed to the escalation of antimicrobial resistance which now pervades the healthcare system. Patients in the intensive care unit and post-transplant are examples of patients who commonly have infections, are more likely to fail treatment and have resistant microbes emerge. In these studies we will characterise the doses of antimicrobials that should be used in these difficult-to-treat patients and rapidly share these for routine clinical use.
Paediatric Emergency Medicine Centre Of Research Excellence (PEM-CRE)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,673,400.00
Summary
The Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative (PREDICT) is an existing research network. By coordinating the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Centre of Research Excellence PREDICT will provide evidence to fill knowledge gaps in paediatric emergency care, develop better pathways to improve practice in the Emergency Department, and create a new ability to translate knowledge to improve care of children in Australasian emergency departments.
Centre Of Research Excellence In Translating Nutritional Science To Good Health
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,499,994.00
Summary
At current rates, over two thirds of Australians will be overweight by 2025, and a third will develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. Meanwhile, elderly Australians and those requiring intensive care admissions are at risk of debility from under-nutrition. Our Centre links scientists in the laboratory with clinical researchers to develop nutritional solutions to a number of major diseases, and has the expertise to apply these in the community.
Centre Of Research Excellence In Prehospital Emergency Care
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,499,626.00
Summary
The Prehospital Emergency Care - Centre for Research Excellence (PEC-CRE) will build capacity in prehospital research in Australia through the conduct of collaborative research projects between academic researchers, clinicians and ambulance service providers. The overarching goal of the PEC-CRE will be to strengthen the evidence base underpinning prehospital emergency care policy and practice, to ensure that ambulance patients receive ‘the right care, in the right place, at the right time’.
Breathe Well: A Centre For Research Excellence In Chronic Respiratory Diseases And Lung Ageing
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,527,082.00
Summary
Our CRE is based on common respiratory conditions covering wide spectrum of ages and severity. We will investigate how to maintain optimal respiratory health, through innovative approaches to early detection, improved therapy and adherence. We have a strong multi-disciplinary team of collaborators and we will build capacity through post-doctoral fellowships to improve our structural balance and optimise translational outputs. Tasmania is an ideal community to host a strong CCRE.
