Vector network analyser suite for advanced terahertz materials and devices. This project aims to establish terahertz measurement capabilities to further Australia's strength and momentum in terahertz research. This will comprise of two terahertz extension modules, working with a dedicated vector-network analyser, and high-precision probes and probe station. The project will enable point-feeding, monochromatic, coherent, and fine spectral-resolution measurement at an atmospheric window of 220-330 ....Vector network analyser suite for advanced terahertz materials and devices. This project aims to establish terahertz measurement capabilities to further Australia's strength and momentum in terahertz research. This will comprise of two terahertz extension modules, working with a dedicated vector-network analyser, and high-precision probes and probe station. The project will enable point-feeding, monochromatic, coherent, and fine spectral-resolution measurement at an atmospheric window of 220-330 GHz. The capabilities are essential for development of two-dimensional materials, active components, waveguides, and antennas towards a common goal of efficient integrated terahertz devices and systems. The project will serve emerging terahertz applications including standoff imaging and short-range high-speed data transmission. This will have broad impact in the areas of surveillance, biomedicine, security, and public safety and well-being.Read moreRead less

Like the electricity network, the Internet is a core infrastructure, and so must be reliable, efficient, and fairly accessible. A gap in bandwidth supply is like a blackout in terms of lost business and productivity. Inefficiency increases costs as more equipment is needed for the same service, and an inability to police network providers distorts economics and strangles access to the best services. Network health can only be assessed through measurements, however, current methods are incapable of measuring some of the most important metrics, for instance whether a provider is conforming to its contract. This project will provide the breakthroughs necessary to ensure that network behaviour can be accurately and comprehensively assessed.Read moreRead less

Fostered by continuous technology advances, a vision of the Industrial Internet is emerging, in which equipment, machines, and industrial robots are interconnected to each other and to the cloud, allowing remote control of industrial processes and critical infrastructure, to intelligently optimise their behaviour with minimal human intervention. Moving from the state-of-the-art small pilot projects to a global Industrial Internet requires wireless systems with consistent high reliability, low latency and massive connectivity. In this project we will develop new communication-theoretic principles and technologies for wireless networks meeting the demands of critical industrial and infrastructure applications in the Industrial Internet era.Read moreRead less

Like the electricity network, the Internet is a core infrastructure connecting society, and so must be reliable, efficient, and secure. A gap in bandwidth supply is like a blackout in terms of lost business, productivity and essential data. Inefficiency increases costs as more equipment is needed for the same service, and poor security threatens both the economic and personal spheres, limiting freedom and adding cost. A raw material of network health and security is network measurements showing what is going on. However, current methods cannot cope with the size and speed of today's Internet. This project will provide the measurement breakthroughs necessary to ensure that networks are reliable, secure, and fairly priced.Read moreRead less

A key aspect in bushfire control is early detection of ignitions by spreading miniature low power sensors in a large potential area in an ad hoc fashion and localizing. Response to panic alarm buttons by retirees in a retirement village where they are free to walk around while their location is monitored in real time using a wireless tag they carry to transmit data relating to their physical health(i.e blood pressure, ECG etc). Locating live stocks roaming around in the dairy industry using sensory transmission used for monitoring their statues is vitals for the farmer for improving efficiency.

Discreet reading of printable multi-bit chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on polymer banknotes. Counterfeiting of banknotes is a serious and costly world-wide problem, and very sophisticated measures are necessary to thwart counterfeiters. This project will use radio frequency identification techniques to enable bank tellers and other staff handling cash to discreetly check banknotes as they count them in front of customers.
