The project aims to investigate the cultural and economic value of Australian music exports. It will be the first methodical study on how Australian artists are developed internationally through government and industry programs. It intends to provide a detailed picture of entrepreneurial activity within and between industries, not-for-profit sectors and governments. The project aims to assess the effects of globalisation and digitisation in the creation of a music export, and the impact of cultural and economic value chains on an Australian music export. The intended outcomes are strategies for improving the audibility and visibility of Australian music within increasingly complex international networks and systems of music production, consumption and governance.Read moreRead less

This project seeks to explore how a stigmatised Indigenous population recovers its self-confidence and socio-economic status. This ethnographic project aims to document how and to what extent one Indigenous group in the post-Suharto era of regional autonomy in Indonesia is improving its status through affirmative political action based on its traditional musical arts, philosophy and Islamic beliefs. Using a novel ethnomusicological methodology, it plans to delineate the stylistic identity of their traditional, new and popular musical arts and youth culture, and theorise about the changing meanings of culture and Islam among this marginalised people.Read moreRead less

This project plans to explore the conditions and strategies needed for musicians to sustain successful portfolio careers. Most musicians have ‘portfolio careers’, combining aspects of performance, recording, creation, music direction, teaching, community activities, health, retail and a presence in online environments. This phenomenon — often across music genres — is widespread but not well understood. The project involves surveys and 12 in-depth case studies of individual musicians or ensembles that will aim to identify key success factors and obstacles. This information is intended to inform opportunities for training, development and support.Read moreRead less
Violent music: social, psychological, and neurological implications. This project will examine the forms and prevalence of violent music; its short- and long-term effects on aggression, emotional states and cognitive function; and neurological correlates of engagement with violent music. This project will examine the forms and prevalence of violent music; its short- and long-term effects on aggression, emotional states and cognitive function; and neurological correlates of engagement with violent music. Music with violent themes is often blamed for antisocial or criminal behaviour, but we have little scientific understanding of the extent to which violent music interacts with social attitudes, emotions, actions and cognitive functions in musicians and fans. The project is expected to develop an empirically driven model of the pathways between violent music, thought and action, and to test hypotheses for how negative consequences of exposure to violent music can be minimised and social and psychological benefits maximised.Read moreRead less

This project tests a growing belief that by investing in opportunity for musical participation we may develop the capacity to improve individual, family and community well being. The work advances the knowledge base by generating theories and evidence about why we should invest in music-making in order to promote well being across the lifespan. It undertakes systematic investigations to identify specific variables that promote well being in music activities. It develops best practice guidelines for music practitioners across a range of disciplines using a variety of modalities and offers potential to inform policy development.Read moreRead less
Building resilient school communities through tailored arts programs. This project aims to provide school leaders and policymakers with new tools and information to guide the allocation of scarce resources to arts programs in primary schools. Schools with low socio-economic status both desire and deserve the opportunity to maximise the many educational and social benefits that flow from participation in arts programs. The project aims to generate new understanding of these benefits by drawing together practical and theoretical expertise about the arts and positive engagement in schools. The outcomes should provide key stakeholders with novel solutions for making critical decisions about when and how to most effectively use tailored arts programs to build resilience in school communities.Read moreRead less
Controlling interactive music performance: enhancing live performances by human musicians and algorithmic computer systems. This project will investigate techniques for the control of computer music systems during performances with a musician. It will identify and evaluate parameters and patterns for expressive variation of music algorithms, contribute new theories of music representation, and provide insights into human interactions with semi-autonomous technologies.

This project aims to understand the universal perceptual and cognitive mechanisms underlying musical communication. Music is a language of the emotions with a remarkable capacity to communicate across personal and cultural boundaries. This project will develop and refine a computational toolbox of perceptual models in light of behavioural experiments using musical and non-musical sonic stimuli. These models will also be used to develop software to compose perceptually grounded music. The intended outcomes are increased knowledge of perception, composition and computational modelling of music, which will stimulate investigations into music's societal benefits and therapeutic applications.Read moreRead less
