Summary
A collaboration to study organisational and social factors of work practice change to reduce risk of harm in healthcare. Preventing harm is a national priority in healthcare and research. Recent studies that quantified the extent of healthcare error has focussed policy attention on technical solutions to manage risk. This focus has not brought hoped-for sustainable improvement because the often-invisible environmental barriers to change have not been identified and addressed. Preventing harm is a national priority in healthcare and research. Recent studies that quantified the extent of healthcare error has focussed policy attention on technical solutions to manage risk. This focus has not brought hoped-for sustainable improvement because the often-invisible environmental barriers to change have not been identified and addressed. A cross-disciplinary collaboration of academics, consumers and industry partners will link to investigate the organisational, social and psychological factors that facilitate or impede change and the conditions under which sustainable improvement can be achieved. Demands on levels of content and technical knowledge are accelerating from many employment sectors in Australia and elsewhere. Globalisation and Teacher Movements into and out of multicultural Australia. Education underpins a cohesive and successful society, but today education is increasingly globalised. This project explores the 'brain circulation' of Australian teaching professionals. It will produce a comprehensive national picture of the dynamics (personal and institutional) underlying the movement of teachers into and out of Australia, with a focus on regional and rural areas as well as the cities. This project will investigate the construction industry's informal gender rules and their role in inhibiting policy measures to improve gender equity and diversity in the industry's professional ranks. The project will make innovative recommendations for shifting the stubborn gender imbalance.

This project will examine the internal dynamics of the Australian Jewish community, its institutional structure, and responses to internal and external pressures, including terrorism. The study will analyse the interaction of the Jewish community with the broader Australian society, including relations between the internalised norms of the community and the demands made by participation in a pluralist society. Constructing regionally appropriate anti-racism strategies for Australia. Racism is an international social scourge, and Australia is not immune from its injurious effects. The experience of racism degrades senses of belonging and generates disaffection, leads to ill-health and restrictions of mobility, as well as other social and individual pathologies. Reducing racism will strengthen Australia's social fabric. Measuring and mapping the experience of racism in Australia. This is the first empirical assessment of the circumstances and frequency of the experience of racism in Australia. A telephone survey, 12000 respondents, and fieldwork in ten localities, are the major method. Spatial and social variations in the experience of racism will be analysed. Social construction theory will be tested as an explanation of such variations. Regional anti-racism packages will be developed and tested in the field. ....Measuring and mapping the experience of racism in Australia. This project will demonstrate the central influence of place and context to attitudes to and experiences of racism. International comparative assessments of racism are rare. Comparable key concepts will be agreed, e.g.: attitudes towards cultural diversity and national identity; extent and experience of racism; multicultural policies.
