Summary
Few obstetric complications are as emotionally devastating for women and their care givers as stillbirth. Many of the underlying causes of stillbirth are unknown, and almost 25% of stillbirths are unexplained. By applying advanced analysis methods onto linked population health data, this study aims to investigate the trends of stillbirth. And importantly to determine the risk factors of stillbirth, and of further stillbirths in subsequent pregnancies following a stillbirth.

This project will link data from the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry, the stroke survivor and carer needs survey and Commonwealth and state datasets to obtain a better understanding of the post-discharge health service utilisation of survivors of stroke and how this relates to reported long-term unmet needs in this group. This information will be used to inform interventions to improve outcomes and service delivery for survivors of stroke.
“Taking Control Again”: Better Care For Aboriginal People With Persistent Musculoskeletal Pain

Persistent disabling musculoskeletal pain (PDMP) e.g. from the spine, shoulder, knee, is an unmet priority in Aboriginal health care. We will investigate Aboriginal peoples’ experiences of PDMP, develop and utilise an audit tool to ascertain current health care practices, and develop, implement and evaluate a model of PDMP care. This project is in three rural West Australian sites and underpinned by cultural security. The anticipated outcome is better PDMP care and an implementation-ready model.

Children have central venous access devices (CVAD)– tubes inserted into great veins leading to the heart- to enable treatment of complex health conditions. But paediatric CVAD are problematic for clinicians, and stressful for children and families - many result in severe complication and stop working. The project aims to advance paediatric CVAD care by identifying paediatric CVAD burden, and developing an innovative, data and technology-based resource -the e-Vascular Access Passport.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and people with CKD have high rates or cardiovascular disease and death. Proteinuria (protein in the urine) is an early sign of CKD and studies have shown that even in people with normal kidney function, it is associated with poor outcomes. However, the effect of change in proteinuria has not been well studied. We aim to determine the effects of proteinuria change on CKD progression and other important outcomes to improve the early detection of CKD.

Cancer of the oesophagus is a deadly disease with less than 20% of patients expected to live beyond one year after diagnosis. Oesophageal cancer is strongly linked to acid reflux and obesity. This study will look at the economic impact of treating patients for oesophageal cancer and associated precursor conditions and explore the cost-effectiveness of potential screening options for individuals at high-risk.
