Generating And Translating Evidence Into Practice In Womens Health And Beyond
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$501,659.00
Summary
Obesity is increasing with major reproductive and metabolic health impacts for women and the next generation. This fellowships focuses on prevention of obesity and optimal diagnosis and management of obesity related reproductive and metabolic conditions in women including before and during pregnancy. Translation is vital to deliver health benefits from research. Here Prof Teede will generate new evidence and translate this into practice in women’s health and beyond to deliver tangible impact.
Immunisation is second only to clean water and sanitation as a life-saving activity. Vaccine safety is considered to be very important by the general public, the media and the health professions. With so many diseases controlled and now rare, the safety of vaccines assumes greater importance. Research is needed on new and safer vaccines, using e.g. a needle-free approach, against old foes, like influenza, and new enemies (like MERS) with vaccine safety more important than ever.
Airway Inflammometry For Asthma And COPD: Practitioner Fellowship Peter G Gibson
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$568,892.00
Summary
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will receive the benefits of personalized medicine with this Fellowship funding. Dr Gibson, an international leader in this field, has identified key biomarkers that will allow treatments to be rationalized based on the underlying disease mechanisms. This research will translate the benefits on modern technology and apply these to individualized care for people with asthma and COPD, who can expect fewer lung attacks and better quality of life.
Determinants Of The Outcomes From Infectious Diseases
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$532,630.00
Summary
Professor Lloyd will continue studies of the factors which lead to varied clinical outcomes from common infectious diseases. The outcomes include chronic or persistent illness, rather than prompt recovery. The factors being studied include aspects of the microbes causing the infection; and aspects of the individual suffering from infection, including genetic make-up, immune defences, and treatment responses. The infections studied include common "flu-like" illnesses, as well as hepatitis C.
This Practitioner Fellowship will support studies that will contribute directly to the efforts to eliminate HCV infection from Australia. The research program aims to reduce transmission of HCV infection by evaluating the best models of care for i) engaging and treating high risk individuals with HCV infection, including people who inject drugs and prisoners, ii) preventing reinfection with HCV, and iii) re-treatment of individuals who fail treatment due to drug resistance.
An Integrated Research Program In Clincial Toxicology Toxicovigilance And Treatment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$568,892.00
Summary
Drug-related deaths in Australia account for 6.6% of all deaths (ABS 2009). In much of the rural Asia-Pacific, pesticide poisoning and snakebite are major problems. This research supports an integrated national and international clinical toxicology research program covering medicine and chemical poisoning, serious adverse drug reactions, snake and spider bite. Its focus is on the applied research needed to detect new problems and rapidly translate early findings into better treatment, regulation ....Drug-related deaths in Australia account for 6.6% of all deaths (ABS 2009). Working With Indigenous Services And Communities To Reduce The Harms From Alcohol
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$474,513.00
Summary
Indigenous Australians face up to eight times the rate of hospitalisation for alcohol-related conditions. Reducing this burden will be key to closing the health gap. Professor Kate Conigrave will build on longstanding partnerships with Indigenous communities, services and health professionals to conduct a 5-year program of work aimed at improving treatment and prevention of alcohol problems. This will span settings including Indigenous primary health services, prisons and whole communities.
Improving Health Outcomes For Disadvantaged Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$585,269.00
Summary
I am a paediatrician researcher dedicated to improving health and quality of life for ill and disadvantaged children. The focus of my Fellowship will be research in three areas: rare childhood diseases, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and vaccine-preventable disease, with attention to diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Alignment of my research and clinical work and my experience in evidence-based medicine will facilitate adoption of my research into clinical care and health policy.
Optimising Evidence-based, Equitable And Efficient Care For Common Child Health Conditions.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$481,156.00
Summary
Care for common conditions such as sleep problems, mental health disorders, and food allergy is often plagued by mismanagement, long wait times, inequitable access, and waste. These factors can worsen child health and quality of life, increase financial and social pressures on families, and deplete the limited health budget. I will develop, implement and evaluate innovative and sustainable solutions to improve care, access to care, and reduce waste in these conditions.
The renewal of my Practitioner Fellowship will continue to facilitate an expanding program of epidemiological and clinical research in viral hepatitis, with a primary focus on hepatitis C. New directions will include development of international clinical cohort and trials networks, particularly to characterise the natural history of early hepatitis C infection and evaluate hepatitis C therapuetic strategies for injecting drug users.
