This project aims to deliver an artificial intelligence-enabled decision-making tool to maintain and manage the floating covers of vast lagoons that treat raw sewage. The cover harvests the biogas released from the anaerobic digestion of sewage for electric power generation that exceeds the plant’s requirement. The approach involves an innovative thermographic technique and exploits transfer learning to adapt neural networks trained on lab-scale and synthetic data to field implementation. The outcome is a machine learning framework to optimise biogas harvesting and renewable energy generation, and to avoid structural failure, that is capable of continuous improvement to take into account improved data and/or modelling capabilities.Read moreRead less

Predictive fire models are increasingly being considered to analyse fire events. Nevertheless, the burning characteristics of solid combustibles relevant to household and industrial fires are yet to be thoroughly understood and described. This project focuses on the development of novel and innovative predictive fire models by incorporating a more comprehensive analysis of the combustion process of solid fuel, and directly linking the chemistry with particular volatiles emitted from the solid combustibles. These volatiles are regarded as being game-changing for fire engineering design assessments for a wide range of high temperature conditions in different settings and configurations.Read moreRead less
Certified evaluation of uncertainty in models of dynamical systems. The purpose of this project is to develop methods which will aid engineers to better analyse the accuracy of models created using experimental data. To support the use of the methods, a toolbox with software implementations will also be developed.

Bandwidth and energy demands of telecommunications networks are rapidly reaching a crisis point technologically, economically and from a sustainability viewpoint. At the same time, on-chip interconnects for silicon integrated circuits are also reaching a bottleneck. This project aims to combine the expertise of eight leading international groups to pioneer nonlinear photonic integrated circuits compatible with silicon technology (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology, or CMOS) to achieve new capabilities on a chip for signal generation, processing and measurement for telecommunications, computers, and fundamental science. These platforms are expected to allow the integration of electronics with photonics and to be faster, cheaper, smaller, and more energy efficient than current technology.Read moreRead less
