Australia is in the midst of a water crisis. Available water sources are dwindling. Alternative water sources are key to Australia's sustainable water future. National and international experiences show that while alternative water treatment technologies are available, public acceptance is the most important factor to determining the successful implementation of alternative water schemes. This project will study public acceptance of a range of alternative water schemes in Australia. It will identify barriers to adoption of these alternatives and highlight preferred options by the community. The information needs of Australians will be identified and optimal communication strategies developed.Read moreRead less

Recent research has predicted more frequent and increasingly severe drought events for Australia in the future. Effective management of drought risk requires timely and relevant scientific information, placing scientific advice at the heart of a successful national drought management strategy. There is considerable potential for mutual policy learning as a result of a comparison of the role of scientists in drought policy in the US and Australia. This research project will also strengthen existing ties with top international drought researchers and promote opportunities for further international collaboration in the field of drought research and also in the consideration of the role of scientific advice in the policy process. HPLC-ICP-MS is the most reliable cutting edge technology for speciation of metals and metalloids in biological and environmental matrices, and is essential for toxicological studies, which is a major aim behind NRCET's establishment. It will provide a very powerful utility to fill a badly needed knowledge gap for our research and serve the needs of both postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This technology will provide new opportunities in research. It will strengthen our linkages within Faculty of Heath Sciences and with our research partners in CQU, QUT and Griffith and enforce our strong national and international reputation.Read moreRead less
Coupled Atmosphere-Bushfire Modelling with Application to Canberra 2003. Large bushfires are by far the largest contributor to property losses in Australia. Large bushfires are by far the largest contributor to property losses in Australia. Prescribed fire is an important land management tool for farmers, foresters and park managers among others. There is a need to develop practical and accurate tools for predicting the behaviour and spread of both prescribed and uncontrolled fires. Australian bushfire research and land management would benefit greatly from the application of modern, advanced computational methods. The time is ripe for the huge advances in computer technology and numerical modelling to be applied directly to fire problems, benefiting public safety and the safety of fire-fighting volunteers.Read moreRead less
Environmental drivers for production of the toxin, cylindrospermopsin, by the cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii. Water authorities spend significant resources to monitor and control algal blooms. A significant part of this is monitoring freshwater toxic algal blooms that can impact on drinking water and recreational uses. Water authorities spend significant resources to monitor and control algal blooms. A significant part of this is monitoring freshwater toxic algal blooms that can impact on drinking water and recreational uses. One of the difficulties in monitoring blooms is that the toxin content of individual species can vary considerably. It is unclear whether this is caused by changes in environmental conditions, i.e. nutrient, light, temperature. This project would provide the link between environmental conditions and toxin production to improve the ability to predict and monitor toxin production.Read moreRead less
Regulatory design for water quality management in urban catchments. This project aims, through empirical research (i) to evaluate the effectiveness of current regulatory, quasi-regulatory and other policy strategies for water quality management in urban catchments (including total/integrated catchment management); (ii) to provide practical policy prescriptions concerning how through judicious regulatory and institutional design, those problems may be best addressed for the future; and (iii) adva ....Regulatory design for water quality management in urban catchments. This project aims, through empirical research (i) to evaluate the effectiveness of current regulatory, quasi-regulatory and other policy strategies for water quality management in urban catchments (including total/integrated catchment management); (ii) to provide practical policy prescriptions concerning how through judicious regulatory and institutional design, those problems may be best addressed for the future; and (iii) advance regulatory theory by developing a framework for understanding the relative effectiveness of different regulatory regimes in the context of urban catchment management. Its empirical focus is on the Swan-Canning river in Western Australia.Read moreRead less

Water managers around Australia are currently considering various strategies to deal with water shortages. Many of these management actions have potential to impact water quality, through altering the nutrient balance within reservoirs and hence affecting nutrients available for cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria blooms pose an increasing threat to water supplies, with economic, social and environmental costs of $150M pa in Australia. The project will provide tools to water quality managers to assess how changes to subtropical reservoirs, such as water recycling, catchment land-use changes and increased drawdown are likely to affect nutrient budgets and cyanobacteria blooms.Read moreRead less
People, Pumps and Pipes: A social study of change in the collaborative supply of irrigation services. The research addresses key National Priorities and Priority Goals relating to improved sustainable water management in Australia's foremost river system. The research offers deeper understanding of the social dimensions of National Water Initiative reforms, and specifically motivations for irrigators' decisions contributing to more sustainable water use following legislative reforms. The project links understanding of the nexus between policy and environmental behaviour to advance knowledge of more sustainable water use. Given the current demands on water in the Murray-Darling system and the systems national significance, the research will make a vital contribution to management of this critical national resource.Read moreRead less

This project will firstly strengthen Australia's position in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction practices and research. Secondly, the project will provide timely information relevant to debates about GHG emission control with an economy that grows fast and has the potential to emit a volume equivalent to the global total. Thirdly, the collaborative nature of the effort (linking up with scholars in China) will not only strengthen relations between the two countries but also contribute to the internationalisation program of Australian universities. Fourthly, the project will also assist to train future generations of China-literate Australian scholars.Read moreRead less

Groundwater in the SE region of SA is a valuable resource. The South East Catchment Water Management Board is responsible for planning sustainable management of these resources. The Board seeks to discover whether any marine ecosystems are dependent upon these groundwater resources, to inform their water-allocation planning decisions. This research combines field-based marine ecology with groundwater hydrology to assess the influence of groundwater outflow upon small estuaries, sandy beaches and lagoonal seagrass meadows that exist along the coastline from Kingston SE to the Victorian border. Our multidisciplinary approach will set a benchmark nationally and internationally for such applied research.Read moreRead less
