Summary
The bacterial pathogen non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a common cause of chronic infections of the middle ear and of the airways of patients suffering cystic fibrosis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These infections are associated with bacterial biofilms that are significantly resistant to both antibiotics and immune defences. This project aims to characterise the process of NTHi biofilm development so that novel diagnostic tools and therapeutics can be developed.

Summary
I am an infectious diseases physician focused on the most effective way to use antibiotics to treat infections. People with cystic fibrosis often get lung infections and the bacteria that causes this, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can be difficult to treat. I will be investigating whether infusing antibiotics over a prolonged period of time is more effective than standard therapy in treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Summary
This project aims to significantly advance our understanding of how infectious bacteria are transmitted through the air, and what basic control measures are most effective at preventing this. This research is focused on persons with cystic fibrosis (CF), as they may be particularly susceptible to such transmission, but our results will also help us better understand how other infections are spread through the air. This is especially important given the recent global influenza pandemic.
Intensive Care patients more often than not, develop kidney failure requiring dialysis. Unfortunately there is little information available to inform clinicians of appropriate doses for antibiotics in these patients, putting them at an increased risk of death from ineffective treatment. Our project aims to develop dosing guidelines for the many types of dialysis used globally to achieve concentrations in the blood that optimise antibiotic effects in these most critically ill patients.

Summary
The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes a number of serious diseases of humans particularly of immunocompromised patients. We have found that this bacterium secretes enzymes that have the ability to digest DNA. This proposal aims to work out how this bacterium uses these enzymes to infect human tissues and escape killing by immune cells. The results from this study will help to determine if these proteins may be used as targets for the development of new anti-infective drugs.

Summary
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection. Tropical Australia has experienced multiple outbreaks of dengue in the last decade. This project, conducted in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, will define the accuracy of a rapid diagnostic test for the early diagnosis of severe dengue. In doing so, we will also derive an algorithm using simple laboratory and clinical findings that can help identify those patients at greatest risk of severe complications, with benefits for both patients and hospitals.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis of worldwide distribution caused by infection with pathogenic Leptospira. Infection occurs due to contact with water contaminated by urine of domestic animals. It occurs infrequently in Australia, but recent local surveillance data indicate hospitalisation rate of 56% with an average duration of 5.3 days. Through the combined approach of structural biology and functional microbiology we hope to understand how leptospira interacts with the human host.

Summary
Bacteria are remarkably adaptive and evolve in ways that plants and animals do not. One of these ways is Lateral Gene Transfer or LGT, which is a process allowing bacterial cells to share genes. Such mobile genes can greatly influence the extent to which pathogenic bacteria can cause disease. One notable example is Vibrio cholerae where many strains can be benign but some can give rise to cholera pandemics. Here, we will investigate this phenomenon in this important bacterium.
