Summary
Autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes and thyroiditis arise from defects that cause the immune system to confuse self and non-self. Normally, this distinction is programmed in the thymus. We recently identified the gene that causes a form of autoimmune disease. We also made an important discovery about how the thymus gland regulates self-non-self discrimination. We will build on these two discoveries to gain a precise understanding of how the immune system normally avoids autoimmune disease.

Summary
The actin cytoskeleton forms the structure that not only keeps cells in their normal shape but is also essential for the movement of cells and for interaction between cells. We have recently identified the first patients with an immunodeficiency caused by a defect in a gene called ARPC1B, which plays a crucial role in the regulation of actin. Through the investigation of novel mouse models we will elucidate the pathomechanism underlying the disease of these patients.
Symmetries in CR-geometry. This project aims at investigating symmetries of geometric objects called CR-manifolds. It is expected to open new avenues for understanding such symmetries at the infinitesimal level and lead to ground-breaking results in CR-geometry. Expected outcomes include new methodology, solving long-standing problems, and establishing international research collaborations. The benefits are in enhancing the strength of the research in analysis and geometry performed in Australia ....Symmetries in CR-geometry. Nilpotent associative algebras and spherical hypersurfaces. This project concerns pure basic research in mathematics and is based on an important recently discovered relationship between certain geometric and algebraic objects. In the project, this relationship will be applied in a novel way to solve several significant long-standing problems in the research area of complex geometry.
The Reconstruction and Recognition Problems for Hypersurface Singularities. This project concerns pure basic research in mathematics. It is centred around a surprising relationship between geometric objects called quasi-homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, and algebraic structures described as Artinian Gorenstein algebras. This relationship has not been fully understood despite numerous attempts by internationally based experts to shed light on it. It is centred around a surprising relationship between geometric objects called quasi-homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities, and algebraic structures described as Artinian Gorenstein algebras. This relationship has not been fully understood despite numerous attempts by internationally based experts to shed light on it. Armed with a novel approach to Artinian Gorenstein algebras, this project proposes to clarify the nature of this relationship and utilise it for solving related geometric and algebraic problems. In particular, it aims at obtaining a groundbreaking result in the area of classical invariant theory.Read moreRead less

Uncovering the roles of key ribonucleases critical for post-transcriptional control of chloroplast gene expression. Higher plant chloroplasts harbour key biological processes that are essential to life on earth. Deciphering the roles of important plastid-targeted ribonucleases, central to post-transcriptional ribonucleic acid (RNA) processing events, is crucial to elucidate the genetic elements required to engineer chloroplast metabolic pathways to enhance productive crop yields.
Indigenous mathematical transforms. A class of mathematical transforms, or systematic conversions between related spaces or objects, was practised by some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups. Such transforms from ground to night sky were used in long-distance route-recording and wayfinding techniques. This project aims to elucidate these transforms, and to use this knowledge to extend the mathematical framework and applications of Fourier analysis. There is significant potential for new mathematics to emerge at this exciting interface of Indigenous/non-Indigenous knowledge. Expected outcomes are interdisciplinary research training for Indigenous students and new understanding of Indigenous sciences. Emerging big data technologies such as holography may benefit. This program of research is firmly focussed on the basic mechanisms involved in normal functioning of cells and tissues, followed by a step by step process to understand the abnormal or the diseased. The disease states we are investigating involve the blood and blood vessels, and when there is malfunction it may contribute to conditions as diverse as atherosclerosis, thrombosis, inflammation and cancer. The program thus addresses the fundamentals of diseases which are responsible for most deaths ....This program of research is firmly focussed on the basic mechanisms involved in normal functioning of cells and tissues, followed by a step by step process to understand the abnormal or the diseased. The disease states we are investigating involve the blood and blood vessels, and when there is malfunction it may contribute to conditions as diverse as atherosclerosis, thrombosis, inflammation and cancer. The program thus addresses the fundamentals of diseases which are responsible for most deaths in our society. We will use technology which is proven to provide precise information, the molecular and biochemical processes responsible for cell function (or malfunction). However in each individual project there will be a clear path to a clinical use, diagnostic or therapeutic. Indeed in a number of the components of the program there are already potential treatments and diagnostics in development and trial.Read moreRead less
Symmetry and geometric structures. This is a fundamental research project in mathematics, especially concerned with the interaction between symmetry, differential equations, and geometry. Based on many classical and recently discovered instances, the aim of the project is to use symmetries to build and understand curved geometric structures from their flat counterparts.
