This project will foster technology transfer from the research environment to the private and public sectors, also enabling a student to complete a PhD program.Read moreRead less
River sensitivity to change: An assessment of threshold shifts between River Styles in Coastal NSW. Over 70% of coastal catchments in northern NSW comprise confined or partly-confined valleys in which floodplains are absent or discontinuous. Evolutionary controls on floodplain presence and their sensitivity to disturbance since European settlement will be explained. Increased understanding of the character, behaviour and evolution of these river types will provide a generic framework to assess ....River sensitivity to change: An assessment of threshold shifts between River Styles in Coastal NSW. Evolutionary controls on floodplain presence and their sensitivity to disturbance since European settlement will be explained. Increased understanding of the character, behaviour and evolution of these river types will provide a generic framework to assess river sensitivity to change. The understanding achieved via this project will form the basis upon which to manage these rivers in an environmentally sustainable manner.Read moreRead less

An explosion in the rate of data acquisition in disciplines such as astronomy will require new database structures and management systems. Scientists require fast access and analysis of data from many different telescopes, instruments and theoretical modelling packages. The new directions being explored internationally are based on datagrids, where individual nodes house the physical data archives and expertise, but are networked into a unified system, providing open access to all astronomers. Australian e-Astronomy will provide Phase 1 of a project to develop an astronomy datagrid in Australia, linking to the powerful programs which have just commenced in Europe, UK and the USA.Read moreRead less

The Australian Virtual Observatory. The Australian Virtual Observatory, which is part of the International Virtual Observatory is an ambitious program to consolidate all astronomical data online, in a form which will be accessible to both professional astronomers and also to the wider public. The project will link data, computational resources, high level software and people in an advanced network, which will maximise investment in one of Australia's highest profile scientific programs.
Quantum limits in measurement and communication. By manipulating atoms and single particles of light, quantum technologies promise a revolution in communications systems and high-precision measurements for scientific and engineering applications. By manipulating atoms and single particles of light, quantum technologies promise a revolution in communications systems and high-precision measurements for scientific and engineering applications. The benefits of this revolution may be comparable with those of modern semiconductors. This project will bring these benefits closer by achieving the fundamental limits to measurement allowed by quantum physics, and harnessing the power of these measurements for communication. It will also identify ways to simplify potential quantum technologies, hastening their adoption. This research will place Australian theoretical and experimental researchers at the forefront of 21st century technology.Read moreRead less
The fundamental structure of combinatorial configurations. Combinatorial configurations are fundamental mathematical tools used to model physical problems in the information sciences. Combinatorial configurations are fundamental mathematical tools used to model physical problems in the information sciences. Combinatorial trades arise from the differences between combinatorial configurations. They uniquely determine the underlying structure of the configuration and are central to the determination of defining sets. With this proposal we shall study the existence, properties and applications of combinatorial trades and the associated defining sets. Our results will have applications in the areas of biotechnology, information systems, information security and experimental design.Read moreRead less

The CYCLOPS project brings together a team of leading Australian astronomers to build on this track record with a new facility that further advances Australia's capabilities in both this field, and several other high-profile astronomical endeavours: including the study of seismology in stellar interiors, the detailed measurement of elemental abundances in stars throughout our Galaxy, and the mapping of spot features on the surfaces of stars.Read moreRead less

This project will focus on developing and understanding further the recent invention of the Fresnel fibre, which is designed to overcome diffraction from the end of an optical fibre. More sophisticated designs and combinations will allow arbitrary shaping of the optical field exiting an optical fibre for numerous applications. The physical basis for such phenomena to be realised is the efficient degree of coherent scattering possible in air-material fibre such as air-silica photonic crystal fibres. In conjunction advanced characterisation techniques will be developed.Read moreRead less
