It was anticipated that the implementation of a Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) would decrease fragmentation of care and improve maternal infant health outcomes. The research aims to determine if a changed model of care for remote dwelling Aboriginal women who transfer to Darwin for birth has increased the acceptability of services to women and improved outcomes for mothers and infants.

Summary
In its most severe form the urea cycle disorder OTC deficiency has a high risk of death. Current therapy is liver transplantation which has significant shortcomings including lack of donor organs. Therefore, a need to provide a safer and more effective alternative treatment exists. Liver directed gene therapy with adeno-associated virus (AAV) can potentially provide this treatment. This project aims to optimise AAV2-8 vectors for liver gene therapy in the treatment of metabolic liver disease.

Indigenous women demand changes in healthcare services. This project occurs at the instigation of women from two Top End remote communities. It will analyse the organization and delivery of maternal health care services for women and infants from Maningrida and Wadeye and identify how services could be improved. Little is known about the rates of chronic and recurring mental illness in the Indigenous population, particularly in remote Indigenous communities. This research aims to document the extent of the problem and explore the factors that place individuals at risk of poorer mental health outcomes as well as those factors that promote resiliency and recovery in the face of such risk. In addition, the concept of recovery in mental illness will be expanded to include Indigenous views.

This project will contribute to the understanding of how routinely collected population health data relate to remote Aboriginal communities and how such data can be used in two field sites. Population data are widely used, but the opportunity to investigate these matters is limited. The nesting of this study within a larger project aimed at improving health services for mothers and babies provides a unique opportunity to investigate aspects of applying macro level data at a local level.
