The building industry is seeing a rapid uptake of joining two or more cold-formed steel sections to form large built-up sections with high carrying capacities. The joining consists of screws, or similar fasteners, placed intermittently along the member. The ease of joining encourages innovation in forming versatile new built-up section shapes in expanding areas of application. The project will provide guidelines and numerical tools for the efficient structural design of built-up sections through experimental and theoretical research, studying the new failure modes pertaining to built-up sections, the increase in strength achievable from composite action and the optimum arrangement of fasteners. Long-span cold-formed steel portal frames. Novel solutions will be developed for building portal frames in cold-formed steel at effectively twice the span currently available. Economies are derived from using cold-formed steel, which will benefit the end consumer and help the Australian steel industry to maintain its position as preeminent provider of innovative cold-formed steel solutions.
Analysis and design of midrise built-up cold-formed steel structures. The project will develop an analytical and computational basis for designing midrise buildings in cold-formed steel. It will enable solutions with high column capacities and high lateral load resistance to be realised by using built-up sections, thus overcoming the current barrier to constructing buildings up to 10 storeys from cold-formed steel and enabling green, fully recyclable and rapidly constructed buildings to be achie ....Analysis and design of midrise built-up cold-formed steel structures. This project aims to design age friendly dwellings and neighbourhoods that embrace the reality of millions of older Australians ageing in their homes in the community. Using architectural design-practice research methods that focus on a carefully curated series of design propositions, this project aims to explore how the dwelling and its urban environment can be ‘normalised’ for the growing ageing population through adjustments that make it more adaptable and responsive to their needs, while at the same time improving the city for all. The project aims to pose the following question: what design strategies can be employed to integrate more flexible, affordable and personalised living options that enable older people to continue living and participating within existing urban communities?Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to investigate the long-term reliability of a new earthquake strengthening technique for brick buildings. The technique involves the use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) strips as reinforcement for brick walls and has been shown to give substantial instantaneous strength increases. However, no research has been undertaken to ensure that the improved strength is sustained over the remaining life of the building. The only related research involves reinforced concrete which suggests that a reduction of at least 33 per cent could be expected. Hence, this project will quantify the long-term strength of FRP reinforced brickwork to enable engineers to safely apply this new cost-effective retrofit technique.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop an in-depth understanding of the interactions between volumetric units in modular buildings to develop integration strategies for the interconnection of modules. The uptake of modular construction has been hindered by the technical complexities of the design process for manufacture and assembly, in particular the flexible connection of services. By addressing significant gaps in the guidance on the design of modular interconnections and their integration strategies, this project expects to enhance the industry’s capacity to adopt safe, economical and standardised designs of modular systems. This project should significantly reduce the risk in decision making in modular construction, and transformation to advanced building manufacturing technologies in Australia and beyond.Read moreRead less
Foundation systems for reactive soils using scarification and screw piles. This project will investigate the use of soil scarification, in combination with screw piles, as a reliable option for light-weight foundations on damaging reactive (expansive) clay soils. It will validate an innovative foundation alternative that will result in significant cost savings for residential foundations on reactive soil.

This project aims to develop a next-generation building system integrated with robotic construction, using intelligent interlocking block units with hazard resistance, and sustainable engineered recycled plastic waste materials. It spans from discovery of using recycled waste materials to development of analysis and design methods for a new interlocking structure, as well as mitigation measures for blast resistance. The successful implementation of this project will result in a technically, financially and environmentally sound structure form for the next-generation of robotic construction. This should lead to a revolution in construction that will substantially improve construction efficiency, quality and affordability.Read moreRead less

Disability housing is problematic, largely because stakeholders find it difficult to agree on priorities whilst incorporating consumer needs and wants for housing. This project seeks to develop a systematic approach to improve multi-stakeholder decision making that can increase the reliability of decisions and improve consumer outcomes. Innovation lies in its customer oriented design and application of business models in the disability sector as well as its integrated disciplinary approach. The research design has not been applied in the Australian research context and aims to provide a much needed blueprint for market investment to develop viable, consumer directed, disability housing options.Read moreRead less

The project plans to improve housing outcomes by evaluating housing design in the rapidly growing infill multi-residential sector, which often experiences design quality problems. Set across four global cities, the project aims to use a unique combination of design and social science methods to analyse good design and how this is produced and experienced. It is expected that this will deliver greater definition of and evidence for ‘good’ design as experienced through the real lives of Australian households. Outcomes should include robust design evaluation methods and transition strategies for cities, allowing city decision-makers to improve housing design for many people in Australian cities.Read moreRead less
