C-type lectins and innate immunity in barramundi. The project aims to identify mannan binding lectins (MBL), key components of innate immunity, in barramundi and to develop quantitative assays for MBL. The project further aims to investigate the role of MBL in infectious processes of Streptococcus iniae, which causes disease in barramundi and humans. The project further aims to investigate the role of MBL in infectious processes of Streptococcus iniae, which causes disease in barramundi and humans. Quantitative assays will be used in conjunction with more traditional assays to evaluate the effect of supplemented feeds on the innate immune system of barramundi and their disease resistance during times of stress. This project will increase our understanding of innate immune pathways in this fish species and aid development of improved feeding strategies.Read moreRead less
Immunomodulatory compounds in marsupial milk. This project aims to isolate and identify unique compounds in marsupial milk that have the capacity to influence immune function. Such compounds have the potential to contribute to both human and animal health and be of both scientific and commercial benefit and could potentially be of value in the treatment of premature and immunologically compromised humans. The project also highlights and exploits the unique research opportunity afforded by the ex ....Immunomodulatory compounds in marsupial milk. Development of a new diet to improve insulin sensitivity and manage weight in healthy cats. This project will determine if a low carbohydrate, moderate fat, high protein diet improves insulin sensitivity and reduces weight gain in cats compared to a typical high-carbohydrate grocery line diet. It will identify risk factors for weight gain such as increased fasting insulin concentration and will also determine which simple assessment of insulin sensitivity best correlates with insulin sensitivity ....Development of a new diet to improve insulin sensitivity and manage weight in healthy cats. This project will determine if a low carbohydrate, moderate fat, high protein diet improves insulin sensitivity and reduces weight gain in cats compared to a typical high-carbohydrate grocery line diet. It will identify risk factors for weight gain such as increased fasting insulin concentration and will also determine which simple assessment of insulin sensitivity best correlates with insulin sensitivity measured by a gold standard. This project should lead to the formulation of a diet designed to improve insulin sensitivity and minimize weight gain in cats, and allow for earlier identification of cats at risk of obesity.Read moreRead less

Disease diagnosis, chronic disease monitoring and stress monitoring all are limited by diagnostic systems that are attached to patients by wires restricting the recording of such parameters to limited intervals in the clinician's office. The proposed system will enable patients to have a range of physiological parameters recorded without the attachment of wires. This will enable extensive periods of diagnostic data to be recorded to characterize respiratory, cardiac and other parameters during extended periods, and during normal daily activity. In addition the system can be used to monitor patients with chronic disease and detect trends in their disease.Read moreRead less
Novel Hydrogels for Bioseparations in Clinical Applications. The project aims to design and synthesise new highly swollen hydrophilic membranes for use in biological separation processes and purifications such as the removal of viruses from blood. High on the Australian agenda is the removal of disadvantage faced by Indigenous groups and the sustainable use of biodiversity on Indigenous land. In terms of Eastern Indonesia, the Australian agenda relates to poverty eradication, with fewer threats to Australian borders in terms of illegal fishing and migration. This project provides fundamental knowledge on household resource use patterns, and the constraints and opportunities for natural resource activities, as a step towards identifying ways in which natural resources can be mobilised to improve livelihoods. The issue of water resources and their sustainable use is probably the most important issue facing the rural sector. The water reform process and its aim to secure water for the environment will cause economic and social pain and result in structural change within the irrigation sector. Properly functioning water markets will play an instrumental role in facilitating this process by providing water for the environment and allowing water to move between competing resources. This study will enable policy makers and water managers to optimise the positive outcome of water markets and increase the likely success of programs to purchase environmental water.Read moreRead less
A framework for prioritising investment in natural resource management. If public funds applied to natural resource management are to achieve the highest level benefit, then the potential projects have to be prioritized. This is difficult when the expected benefits are both incommensurate (e.g. protection of roads v. areas of biodiversity) and uncertain. This project will evaluate alternative decision support methods for making such choices, with a particular focus on salinity management in We ....A framework for prioritising investment in natural resource management. The outcome will be a contribution to aid participatory decision making.Read moreRead less

This project will apply and integrate water quality models and economic assessment techniques to assist policy makers and catchment managers balance competing development pressures and environmental concerns in coastal catchments. The research is fundamental to underpinning the sustainable management of coastal catchments which provide major economic, environmental and community benefits. The project will provide robust tools to predict water quality impacts under a range of conditions and it will develop techniques for the economic valuation of market and non-market impacts. The project will demonstrate the integration of water quality and economic modelling and how it can influence policy and investment in conservation and remediation.Read moreRead less
