Evaluating interventions to prevent serious road traffic crashes. This project aims to advance knowledge on the prevention of road traffic crashes that result in serious injury or death. Road traffic injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalised injury and injury-related deaths in Australia, and are estimated to cost the economy $27 billion annually. This project will establish a data collection system that will evaluate existing and novel countermeasures to serious road traffic crashes. ....Evaluating interventions to prevent serious road traffic crashes. The outcome of this project will inform road safety policies and cost-effective countermeasures. Insights from the project can contribute to road safety improvements in Australia and a substantial reduction in the burden of fatal and non-fatal road traffic injury.Read moreRead less
Dynamic Rollover Occupant Protection (DROP): evaluation and regulation. This projects seeks to establish which occupant crashworthiness attributes a vehicle must possess to prevent injury in a rollover crash. The results will assist regulators, industry and consumer groups understand which critical factors need to be considered to develop rollover crashworthiness regulations, consumer tests and vehicle purchase policy.
Motorcycle protective clothing, crash protection, thermal strain and rider performance. Using a mix of novel studies this project will for the first time provide: basic knowledge of the required performance of protective clothing to prevent injury; the best ways to assess performance; and, resolution around potential negative effects of thermal strain on rider performance. This is is the first study to examine motorcycle protective clothing from a whole-system perspective. In Australia, motorcyclists are over-represented in casualty rates and currently cost the Australian community more than two billion Australian dollars per year. This work will provide knowledge on which public policy and performance assessment protocols can be developed, and ultimately will lead to reduced societal costs from motorcycle crashes.Read moreRead less
Safety management system for heavy vehicle transport. Crashes involving heavy vehicles result in around 330 deaths, over 3000 serious injuries annually, and cost over $6 billion per year. Trucks deliver 72% of Australia's total freight. The quantity delivered by trucks has increased by 40% over a decade and will double over the next 20 years. Conservatively the transport industry contributes about 5.6% to GDP and employs nearly 5% of the workforce. If a 10% reduction in casualty truck crashes were to result from this study, the cost benefit ratio would be around 200 to 1.Read moreRead less

Around 1 in every 3 vehicle occupants die in a crash where the vehicle rolls over. This crash mode also accounts for around 25% of spinal injuries and cost the community around $2.5 billion annually. There are no rollover crash standards or consumer crash tests. The equipment purchased will be used to develop a rollover crashworthiness test protocol that can be adopted by consumer testing groups, to understand the role of fatigue in precipitating rollover crashes, and to develop a driver fatigue metric. It is estimated this research will result in saving around 150 lives, reducing serious spinal and head injuries and save the Australian community around $800 million per annum.Read moreRead less
Road safety and Aboriginal people. This study will involve an in-depth examination of factors underlying the high involvement in road crashes by Aboriginal people in Australia. Using mixed methods in six communities across NSW and South Australia it will inform development of new programs aimed at closing the gap in this important area.
Effects of feedback and incentive-based insurance on driving behaviours. This project aims to examine the extent to which direct-feedback and incentive-based insurance modify a drivers’ behaviour. The project plans to apply in-vehicle telematics and to link information obtained from the technology directly to personalised safety messaging. The project plans to apply in-vehicle telematics and to link information obtained from the technology directly to personalised safety messaging. The project then plans to assess the impact of this by calculating individual personal injury and the potential reduction to property damage insurance premiums. The study has the potential to profoundly influence not only the insurance industry by reducing individual risk and insurance scheme liability, but also deliver reductions in road trauma among the target population namely, young drivers.Read moreRead less

The proposed network seeks to provide an understanding of the relationship between environmental agents/factors and public health. It provides Australia's first, unified effort to undertand the processes involved at a whole-of-environment level. By virtue of its operation, the network will co-ordinate and expand upon the largely scattered and matrix-specific research in this field that currently takes place. It will permit evaluation of environmental agents/factors, as they relate to public health under prevailing environmental conditions. Thus, the major outcome of the network will be effective risk assessment of the expected real-time effects of environmental agents/factors on public health.Read moreRead less
Does Self Management Increase The Effectiveness Of Vocational Rehabilitation For Chronic Compensated Disorders? Workplace injuries result in human suffering and are costly for those injured, employers and the community. For some, the injury results in a chronic disability, a sense of powerlessness, and unemployment. This study will test whether participation in a 'self-management' program improves health and well-being, decreases pain, results in earlier return-to-work and is a more efficient use of resources than usual care in vocational rehabilitation. Self-management programs have been shown to be effective in helping people manage chronic disabling conditions. By adapting the self-management program for this population it is anticipated that the human and financial burden on individuals and society from chronic injuries will be reduced.Read moreRead less
Occupational injury prevention in high temperature environments. This project aims to explore the contribution of heat as a risk factor in work-related illness and injury. Approximately 600 000 Australians experience a work-related illness or injury each year. Hot weather may directly or indirectly lead to accidents, but heat as a risk factor has not been systematically explored, and is particularly relevant in a warming climate. This project aims to improve safety and productivity in Australian industry by generating new evidence and predictive models to inform injury prevention policy and guidance, and facilitating the development of practical, targeted resources. This project expects to add to the body of knowledge regarding workers’ health and safety and to be of benefit to industry and subpopulations at risk.Read moreRead less
