Australian Membership of the International Ocean Discovery Program. This proposal is for an 18-month membership of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), the world’s largest collaborative research program in Earth and Ocean sciences. The Program studies the history and current activity of the Earth by conducting seagoing coring expeditions and monitoring of instrumented boreholes, using globally unique infrastructure that Australians would otherwise have no access to. The unique biogeochemical processes governing POP behaviour in the Polar landscape are not understood, yet are necessary to predict their impact in polar ecosystems. The Antarctic seasonal-ice zone provides an archetype for multi-compartment, temporal observations of POP partitioning in response to the major drivers of ice cover and primary productivity. In addition, the major Antarctic POP reservoirs of seawater and ice will be characterised. Empirical data will be used to parameterise a regional fugacity model. Their exceptional mobility puts them in frequent conflict with human settlements, leading to forced dispersals from roosts.
