Summary
Primary open angle glaucoma is a chronic eye disease and one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. This study will use cutting-edge genetic methods to look at the entire coding component of the human genome (exome) in 271 individuals from large glaucoma families. Our previous studies have shown that these families carry genetic variants that increase disease risk. In this investigation we aim to identify these genes, with the hope they may offer novel targets for tr ....Primary open angle glaucoma is a chronic eye disease and one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. New, Efficient Tests That Map Both Central and Peripheral Vision. This project seeks to develop a new, combined approach for quantifying both central and peripheral vision with a single test. Current methods for testing far peripheral vision are not efficient and not fully automated. Yet peripheral vision is important for tasks involving navigation and hazard avoidance such as driving. The project intends to invent and test new approaches to sampling and measuring the spatial extent of vision. T ....New, Efficient Tests That Map Both Central and Peripheral Vision. The anticipated algorithms will be more accurate and efficient than current tests, will be suitable for older adults, and will enable ready assessment of vision for occupational tasks.Read moreRead less

This is a particularly urgent problem for the healthcare workforce. This project aims to investigate ways to encourage employers to create mentally healthy workplaces. By pioneering use of economic methods, this project expects to generate much-needed knowledge on conflicting incentives that are hindering employer action. Expected outcomes include evidence on how potential policy reforms would affect employers' behaviour, and how they see value for money of workplace mental health initiatives. By informing successful policy change, the project should improve employee wellbeing and increase productivity, which will benefit employers, employees, and society.Read moreRead less
Exploiting high resolution images of the retina to customise vision tests. This project will make vision tests more accurate and faster by using a person's individual eye anatomy to customise the test. The basic understandings discovered in this project are expected to be applied in clinical and research settings thus saving sight, dollars and time.

This project aims to address limitations associated with existing accident causation theory and methodologies. Accident prevention across high risk industries is constrained by limitations in accident theory and methodologies. As a result, reductions in injuries and fatalities in most domains are plateauing. The expected outputs of the project include a new theory of accident causation, a new proactive risk assessment methodology and a new methodology for analysing accidents. This will provide organisations and researchers with a powerful framework for enhanced accident analysis and prevention activities. This will provide significant benefits, associated with reductions in accidents, injuries and fatalities.Read moreRead less

Despite being a longstanding safety problem, the design and operation of level crossings has not changed considerably for decades. This research will provide an in-depth understanding of road user, environmental and infrastructure-related factors that influence safety and performance at rail level crossings. This will be used to develop a world-first model of the level crossing system that is needed to support the development of innovative countermeasures that will improve safety. Reductions in the levels of significant trauma at level crossings, and new public policy for level crossing upgrades, are the intended real-world outcomes.Read moreRead less
Does Self Management Increase The Effectiveness Of Vocational Rehabilitation For Chronic Compensated Disorders? Workplace injuries result in human suffering and are costly for those injured, employers and the community. For some, the injury results in a chronic disability, a sense of powerlessness, and unemployment. This study will test whether participation in a 'self-management' program improves health and well-being, decreases pain, results in earlier return-to-work and is a more efficient use of resources than usual care in vocational rehabilitation. Self-management programs have been shown to be effective in helping people manage chronic disabling conditions. By adapting the self-management program for this population it is anticipated that the human and financial burden on individuals and society from chronic injuries will be reduced.Read moreRead less

The proposed network seeks to provide an understanding of the relationship between environmental agents/factors and public health. It provides Australia's first, unified effort to undertand the processes involved at a whole-of-environment level. By virtue of its operation, the network will co-ordinate and expand upon the largely scattered and matrix-specific research in this field that currently takes place. It will permit evaluation of environmental agents/factors, as they relate to public health under prevailing environmental conditions. Thus, the major outcome of the network will be effective risk assessment of the expected real-time effects of environmental agents/factors on public health.Read moreRead less
Adaptive scenario generation and performance evaluation for virtual training of helicopter pilots. Helicopters are widely used for operations such as remote transport, surveying, search and rescue and medical evacuation. 76 helicopter fatalities were recorded in Australia over the last decade. This project will develop effective pilot training methods, delivered through virtual simulation, to improve aviation safety.
Dynamic Rollover Occupant Protection (DROP): evaluation and regulation. This projects seeks to establish which occupant crashworthiness attributes a vehicle must possess to prevent injury in a rollover crash. The results will assist regulators, industry and consumer groups understand which critical factors need to be considered to develop rollover crashworthiness regulations, consumer tests and vehicle purchase policy.
