Small steps in science: developing young children's science understanding through playgroup incursions. This project will determine how best to structure science-related incursions into playgroups to provide quality experiences to assist children’s learning and to increase adult-child engagement in science activities. The resulting increased understanding will assist parents and early childhood educators to teach science effectively to young children.

To limit the drain on the federal budget as the population ages government have introduced compulsory superannuation; making individuals responsible for a significant proportion of their own retirement income. Employees are able to choose both their superannuation fund and investment mix. These are complex decisions which require a significant level of financial literacy. Failure to make appropriate decisions can significantly reduce wealth at retirement leading to a greater reliance on the age pension. Results from this project will inform government, employers and superannuation funds about the role of financial education in improving financial literacy and hence retirement savings decision making.Read moreRead less
Emotional learning in socioscientific issues for enhancement of scientific literacy. This project will aim to address international concerns about waning student interest and participation in science by engaging middle school students imaginatively in socioscientific issues. Expected outcomes will enhance students' scientific literacy, and the production of positive emotional energy and the classroom emotional climate.
Unlocking the genetic and biochemical potential of kangaroo paws. Using cutting-edge gene technology and an interdisciplinary approach, this project aims to uncover the genes responsible for flower colour in the iconic kangaroo paws of Western Australia, and identify the compounds that produce the colours. The project expects to produce the first entire kangaroo paw genome and identify unique genetic variants and biochemicals underlying colour differences. This new knowledge should help horticul ....Unlocking the genetic and biochemical potential of kangaroo paws. This new knowledge should help horticultural programs to more easily breed varieties with desirable and highly marketable new colours, and could assist in conserving these amazing Australian plants.Read moreRead less
Estimating the population effect of maternal alcohol-use disorders on the educational achievement of children. It is unclear to what extent maternal alcohol-related problems contribute to the increased risk of poor health, academic failure, and times suspended from school in Australian children. This study aims to examine the effect of maternal alcohol-use disorder on infant and child health, development, and educational achievement using education and health data from the Western Australian dat ....Estimating the population effect of maternal alcohol-use disorders on the educational achievement of children. It is unclear to what extent maternal alcohol-related problems contribute to the increased risk of poor health, academic failure, and times suspended from school in Australian children. This study aims to examine the effect of maternal alcohol-use disorder on infant and child health, development, and educational achievement using education and health data from the Western Australian data linkage system. The results will provide new information on the impact of maternal alcohol-related problems on child health and educational achievement and have the potential to inform health and education policies and early identification and targeted intervention strategies. Development of novel and effective strategies for soil microbial- and rhizo-remediation of onshore petrogenic hydrocarbon spills. The extensive use of petroleum products represents a constant threat of oil spills to onshore and offshore environments. Petroleum spillage seriously impacts environment and human health. This project is aimed at providing a suite of techniques for dealing with onshore oil spills and thereby building Australia’s environmental response capability.
Memory consolidation - Integrating cognitive science and neuroscience approaches to how we remember and how we forget. How can we forget what happened yesterday, but vividly remember our first kiss? Neuroscientists think the brain has a special mechanism to strengthen memories with time, but many psychologists disagree. The project aims to bring the brain and the mind closer together, using the cutting-edge combination of brain imaging and psychological modelling.
Testing current methods for understanding and mitigating inbreeding depression in conservation. Although inbreeding can have serious implications for endangered species, possibly even hastening extinction, the methods currently used to measure inbreeding and reverse its effects have been largely untested. This project will explicitly test the utility of these methods to ensure inbreeding is managed effectively in conservation.
Models of Knowledge Restructuring. In a world of rapid change, people must frequently adapt cognitive skills to new technologies. This often requires restructuring of knowledge, from simple initial strategies to increasingly complex ways of mastering the task. This often requires restructuring of knowledge, from simple initial strategies to increasingly complex ways of mastering the task. This is not always easy and people sometimes resist knowledge restructuring. We present a network model of knowledge restructuring that combines attentional processes with error-driven learning. The model accounts for several existing results and makes predictions that guide the proposed research. Three factors will be examined empirically: (1) the role of directing attention to alternative strategies; (2) the imperfection of existing knowledge; and (3) the complexity of alternative strategies.Read moreRead less
