Summary
After brain injury, there are no treatments to stop the spread of damage to intact tissue, a process involving different cell types and biochemical events. Clinical trials have targeted one event and have failed because large therapeutic doses are toxic and because combined treatments are needed to target different events. We will harness nanotechnology to target delivery of small, sustained doses of one or more drugs to specific cell types and biochemical events to stop the spread of damage.

As well as repeated lung infections, children with CF develop insulin deficiency and eventually diabetes. Despite the high burden of cardiovascular diseases among Indigenous Australians, few intervention trials have sought to evaluate novel approaches to reducing differential outcomes in this vulnerable group. The Central Australian Heart Protection Study seeks to test the effectiveness of a nurse-led, family based education and assessment program in reducing the incidence of poor outcomes in indigenous and non-indigenous patient’s following an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).
Improving The Capacity Of Peers To Provide Guidance And Support For Adolescents With Mental Health Problems

Summary
Adolescents frequently look to peers for support when experiencing mental health problems. However, peers may lack the knowledge and skills to provide appropriate guidance and support. This project evaluates a new school-based training program for adolescents called 'teen Mental Health First Aid'. Preliminary evidence shows that this training is effective, but a more rigorous evaluation is needed. If effective, this program can be disseminated nationally and internationally by MHFA Australia.

This project aims to experimentally assess the impact of television advertising that promotes the 2009 NHMRC Guidelines on alcohol consumption, on adults' (aged 18-64) estimates of drinking levels that incur an increased risk of short and long term harm. The Guidelines advise that adults should limit consumption to 2 standard drinks/day to reduce the risk of lifetime harm, and to 4 standard drinks on any single drinking occasion to reduce the risk of short-term harm from that occasion.

This research will develop differently worded and formatted warnings about a wide range of harms of alcohol and assess adult drinkers’ responses to them, compared to current messages on alcohol containers. The study will use population surveys, discussion groups, message ratings and an experimental study with follow-up to determine the content and format of warnings with the greatest potential to encourage drinkers to reduce their alcohol-related risk.

Older people are at increased risk of falls after hospital discharge, but have low levels of knowledge about falls and may be reluctant to undertake falls prevention activities. Providing suitable education may reduce falls in these older patients. This randomized trial will determine if providing personalized falls prevention education in addition to usual care, reduces falls among older people after they leave hospital. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older people in Australia

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that can significantly disrupt normal vocational (i.e., education and employment) development. This trial investigates whether early intervention with a specialised Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model for vocational recovery is more effective than usual vocational supports for 15-25 year olds with BPD. It is expected that IPS will result in more days in mainstream employment and education.

Summary
Stillbirth is devastating for parents and families. Many stillbirths occur late in pregnancy due to deteriorating health of the baby that can be detected by the mother through a decrease in the baby’s movements. 'My Baby's Movements’ is a personalised, user-controlled and interactive mobile phone tool provided as part of routine care to pregnant women to promote general awareness of their baby’s movements. This trial aims to reduce stillbirth rates by early reporting of decreased movements.
