Asia/Pacific HIV/AIDS Database: Support for Regional Policy Research. HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest contemporary threats to global human security, and its rapid growth in parts of the Asia/Pacific region makes it a major concern for Australia. Appropriate responses to the threat require accurate and regularly updated policy information. The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarette ....The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarettes are likely to be associated with smoking rates and failed quit attempts, yet there is little research in this area. By providing a better understanding of the effect of these factors on smoking patterns, the study will suggest the most effective avenues for reducing the rate of smoking in Australia, and thus decreasing its substantial cost to individuals and the community.Read moreRead less
Corporate political activity of tobacco, alcohol and gambling companies in Australia. This project investigates how tobacco, alcohol and gambling industries influence the policy process, by stalling or defeating the implementation of effective public health policies in favour of ones which do not affect profit. The study will develop guidelines for industry-government interaction to ensure maximum public benefit.

The Project will develop a new framework for designing regional employment policy aimed at providing effective solutions to persistently high unemployment across Australia. It will integrate the renewed international focus on public employment strategies and local partnerships with existing and other emerging policy directions. The Laureate Fellowship will use the novel lens of Planetary Health Equity to expose the importance of addressing planetary as well as human systems in achieving global health equity, and investigate the role of governance in realizing that aim. This project will offer a model for assessing the abnormal-price setting for various goods and services, leading to greater transparency of the market. The modelling framework proposed in this project will assist in resolving a significant policy issue, which is now the subject of considerable public debate and not thoroughly examined to date.
Public-private partnerships as a solution to housing affordability problems: a case study of an inner urban development. Through a case study of an innovative inner city, medium density, low cost housing project, the characteristics of a public-private partnership will be described and analysed in many contexts. The financial, political and institutional impediments to the development of such ventures will be identified and broadened to a solution for other Australian municipalities.
