To Improve The Quality And Access To Dialysis Treatments By Indigenous Australians From Remote Areas By Using A Patient-centred Approach To Determine The Cost-effectiveness Of Treatment Models That Include The Health, Social And Economic Impact
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,195,023.00
Summary
Compared to other Australians, Indigenous people from remote areas suffer disproportionately from kidney disease. In order to access treatment they must often relocate, sometimes permanently to urban areas. Communities advocate for services closer to home but most health providers see remote area delivery as prohibitively costly. The study will assess the relative cost-benefits of more patient-centered models of care that are inclusive of impacts on patients, families and communities.
Improving Delivery Of Secondary Prophylaxis For Rheumatic Heart Disease: A Stepped-wedge, Community-randomised Trial
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,913,074.00
Summary
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a major health problem in Indigenous communities. Continued progress in controlling RHD requires an understanding of how to improve delivery of regular injections of penicillin - secondary prophylaxis (SP). We will evaluate a systems-based approach to improving delivery of SP, using a stepped-wedge trial in 12 communities in NT and Qld. If successful, this model will provide a practical and transferable model.
A Population-based Record Linkage Study Of The Impact Of Chlamydia Infection On Reproductive Health In Women
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$405,114.00
Summary
Chlamydia is the most commonly notified infection in young Australian women and reports of cases are increasing. While chlamydia is thought to result in infertility and ectopic pregnancy in later life, the evidence for this is limited. This will be the largest, most comprehensive study in the world to determine the risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy following chlamydia infection. The results will provide vital information to more cost-effectively plan strategies to control chlamydia in Au ....Chlamydia is the most commonly notified infection in young Australian women and reports of cases are increasing. SCALE-C: Strategies For Hepatitis C Testing And Treatment In Aboriginal Communities That Lead To Elimination
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,175,170.00
Summary
Prevalence of hepatitis C infection within the Aboriginal population is among the highest of any identifiable population in Australia. Highly effective, direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy, and their listing on the PBS in 2016 has revolutionised HCV clinical management in Australia. The SCALE-C study will evaluate an established test and treat model to rapidly scale-up DAA within four Aboriginal communities to determine both impact on community prevalence and ongoing transmission.
Integrating choice set formation and taste heterogeneity in market segmentation. This project develops a new model of consumer decision-making to provide managerial insights related to market segmentation, product portfolio optimisation and marketing communication strategies. The model can be specified for a particular product category using data collected from a novel elicitation instrument developed as part of this project.
CENTRE OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE TO REDUCE INEQUALITY IN HEART DISEASE
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,607,253.00
Summary
There is increasing recognition of a societal responsibility to provide effective and sustainable health care to the entire population and not just to selected parts. Indigenous and regional Australians are most affected by Australia's biggest killer - heart disease. In response, the CRE to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease, is a national collaboration of researchers from a range of health disciplines. Together they aim to address this problem by developing sustainable and cost-effective health ....There is increasing recognition of a societal responsibility to provide effective and sustainable health care to the entire population and not just to selected parts. The paradox of choice: Unravelling complex superannuation decisions. Australia has been a world-leader in retirement savings policy, but there remains a pervasive lack of understanding about how best to communicate complex financial information to decision-makers, along with a push by government for clearer disclosure and greater financial literacy. This project will inform regulators and the superannuation industry on how choices are made and how to present clearer, better-designed information to be understood by ordinary participants, thus encouraging active, well-informed participation rather than passive 'default' decisions. More efficient investment and benefit choices will improve the economic welfare of retirees, reduce the burden on the working-age population and improve fiscal sustainability.Read moreRead less

Mental disorders attract social stigma and those diagnosed are widely misunderstood. This project aims to collect and analyse accounts of people living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) - mainly women - and perspectives of social support practitioners. The intended outcome is to provide a sophisticated understanding of BPD as a social phenomenon, develop sociological evidence based on lived experiences and generate Australian digital resources including narratives of BPD, creative outputs and practitioner perspectives. The anticipated goal of this project is to inform policy and community responses addressing stigma and marginalisation, and the improvement of social support for those affected by BPD.Read moreRead less

This project aims to create a breakthrough switching dynamics approach and new technology to speed up finding optimal solutions. It will develop a distributed switching dynamics based optimisation scheme for global optimisation problems in industrial big-data environments where timely decision making is required. It will result in a practical technology for industry optimisation problems such as economic energy dispatch in smart grids and optimal charging and discharging tasks in a large network of electric vehicles, helping Australian power industry improve efficiency and security, as well as training the next generation scientists and engineers for Australia in this emerging field.Read moreRead less

The aim of the study is to explore "social practices" of oral health in Australian (Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) preschool children. We use this emerging theory to move away from focusing on individuals and individual behaviour (and blame) to identify and map social practices: actions, materials and meanings families attribute to
child’s oral health. Expected project outcomes include identifying practices promoting or undermining children’s oral health that can inform upstream and downstream policy directions and practices to improve health outcomes. This offers a new approach to "wicked" problems such as oral health where extensive
effort has not reduced morbidity and cost despite rhetoric that oral health is preventable.Read moreRead less
