The key items of infrastructure in our cities are seen to be in crisis. Yet despite a growing willingness to fund new infrastructure, governments at all levels struggle to devise, rank and deliver infrastructure projects. The project will recover and rebuild a language for understanding the role of infrastructure in Australian cities and then devise criteria for better enactment of the infrastructure procurement and provisioning processes. The project's prime outcomes will intersect with a growing need for better ways to build and operate large economic infrastructure and thus contribute to building cities that perform better economically, are more liveable, and contribute to long term environmental sustainability goals.Read moreRead less

This project aims to document structural change in the downstream auto industry and transitions in affected local workshops. The project design is informed by evolutionary and labour agency theories and employs comprehensive survey and ethnographic methods. The analysis will aim to identify new technical and competitive dynamics for local auto repair and maintenance firms, and examine changing skill requirements for workers. Such knowledge is crucial to protect jobs in repair and maintenance – the largest source of auto industry employment. Results will build new knowledge on industry transitions across geographical sites and scales.Read moreRead less

In terms of river-based business activity, the success of cities located on the Murray River, such as Albury/Wodonga, Echuca, Swan Hill and Mildura varies. We shall identify how some towns along the river have added value to the natural advantage of the river through business clustering while others have not. Processes by which successful communities have gained and retain advantage will be compared with strategies applied by less successful towns. The concept of business clustering not only permits regional diversity to be more readily understood, but points to future initiatives for less successful regions.Read moreRead less
