Summary
Over 100,000 children attend family day care in the homes of 12,000 providers in Australia. Family day carers work under challenging conditions and many carers leave the profession annually. The working conditions, mental health and job stress of family day carers and how their mental health may relate to quality of care has not been investigated. This PhD study will examine these issues and explore if and how a systems approach can improve family day carer mental health and job satisfaction.

Summary
Reducing the number of Australians with mental health problems is now a major priority for policy makers. This project targets young adults struggling with stressors in their work and family lives. The study will enhance our understanding of the work and family life experiences of 2000 young adults over a period 12 years (1999-2011) to find out how major life events such as relationship breakdown, having a baby, and losing your job, impact on the mental health of young Australians.
A psychosocial approach to subjectivity and the changing Australian labour market. An examination of the discourses and narratives people draw on to make sense of and adapt to the changing Australian labour market will be undertaken. The meanings that are made and the patterns of adaptation to the changing workplace in terms of fatigue, uncertainty, insecurity, stress and depression, and the effects these have on workers, their families and their places of work will also be scrutinised. Suicide prevention and management of deliberate self-harm: randomised control trial of an assertive engagement, brief psychotherapy and community linkage model. Suicide is the second commonest cause of death by injury in Australia. Suicide prevention is an important public health priority but rates remain high. People who have previously attempted suicide are most likely to kill themselves. Workplace death: assessing and improving institutional responses to the needs of surviving families. The impact of workplace death and institutional responses on surviving families is seldom examined. Pilot research revealed enduring consequences not addressed by institutional responses. The project will use novel methods to advance scientific knowledge of how workplace death affects families and provide guidance to improved policy interventions.
