This project merges theoretical and practical approaches to theatre production to make the complex phenomenon of theatre space more accessible to both researchers and industry professionals. It achieves this by providing a virtual reality model of selected theatres, so that users might better comprehend a venue's spatial dynamics. This dimensionally-accurate representation permits a full understanding of a theatre space (and its potential for performance) even from remote locations, thus potentially making the production of theatre more cost effective. There is no other such project in the theatre world or in computer modelling research.Read moreRead less

This project aims to understand the universal perceptual and cognitive mechanisms underlying musical communication. Music is a language of the emotions with a remarkable capacity to communicate across personal and cultural boundaries. This project will develop and refine a computational toolbox of perceptual models in light of behavioural experiments using musical and non-musical sonic stimuli. These models will also be used to develop software to compose perceptually grounded music. The intended outcomes are increased knowledge of perception, composition and computational modelling of music, which will stimulate investigations into music's societal benefits and therapeutic applications.Read moreRead less

Integration of interactive narrative and virtual reality hardware and software is a novel approach to the current problems in digital media. It is expected to lead to the development of new generation interactive films and computer games that benefit from the Interactive Drama engine in the context of narrative.Read moreRead less

This project offers three benefits to the nation. It will enrich our understanding of the unique development of Australian spoken word drama by comparing research findings on the incorporation of Henrik Ibsen's plays in our dramatic canon with parallel investigations in China, India, and Bangladesh. It will create new knowledge about the way theatrical performances communicate ideas and modes of human expression across national boundaries, thus increasing our understanding of the global transmission of culture. The knowledge gained about intercultural creative production through this project, can be applied both to other areas of industrial production, and to Australian cultural diplomacy.Read moreRead less

This project provides a public space for audience members in local communities in Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, UK and USA to share their memories of local popular music heritage. By privileging these voices, the project has the potential to develop and strengthen community cohesion and also raise questions of how these voices might be incorporated into the production and distribution practices of Australia's music industry. Our findings will feed into current debates about the importance of local histories in a national context and point to possible economic benefits through cultural tourism and leisure outlets, for example, community-based exhibitions and guided tours focusing on local popular music history and heritage.Read moreRead less
