Northern hemisphere climates switched repeatedly and abruptly between cold and warm states during the ice ages. This unexplained finding poses uncertainties about future climate. The exact chronology of past sea level and climatic changes is a key to the problem: this project aims to establish precise chronology through re-analysis of coral terraces at Huon Peninsula, PNG. New U-series dating methods will give an accurately-timed record of sea level changes, which will be tightly locked to marine-sediment records of climatic change, by using sharp changes in atmospheric radiocarbon as universal marker horizons.Read moreRead less
Mid-Holocene coral reef bleaching and recovery in the South China Sea and its implications for the modern Great Barrier Reef. Strong evidence shows the mid-Holocene was 1-2 ÂșC warmer than the present, implying a greater probability for coral bleaching. We have collected well-preserved mid-Holocene reef corals from the northern South China Sea, which contain growth hiatuses reflecting bleaching and mortality. We propose to use high-resolution Sr/Ca, d18O and microstructure analysis and high-preci ....Mid-Holocene coral reef bleaching and recovery in the South China Sea and its implications for the modern Great Barrier Reef. We propose to use high-resolution Sr/Ca, d18O and microstructure analysis and high-precision U-series dating of coral growth bands to determine the season and sea-surface temperature when each growth hiatus occurred and to establish the timing and duration of the growth hiatus. Reconstructed mid-Holocene coral bleaching history has important implications for management of the Great Barrier Reef during predicted global warming.Read moreRead less

Toxic algal blooms in estuarine and coastal waters can have devastating economic and ecological impacts but remarkably little is known about the factors that control either organism growth or toxin severity. Recent studies suggest that the interplay between delivery of the nutrient trace metals iron and copper and the method via which the organism acts to assimilate these metals is critical to the generation and aggressiveness of the toxins produced. These processes will be investigated in this study and conceptual and mathematical models will be developed which will assist in assessing management options for estuarine and coastal environments.Read moreRead less

The Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area ranks as the most significant area for documenting Australia TMs unique cultural and environmental history. Parts of this remarkable archive are being lost through erosion. This project is the basis for a strategic research alliance between the custodians and managers of the area and leading Australian research institutions to build a picture of the continent TMs human and environmental history before this evidence is irretrievably lost. Lake Mungo is known to Australians as the site of the world TMs earliest cremation and a window into our remote past. We will provide novel insights into the evolution of the Australian landscape, its fragile environment and the history of its resilient inhabitants.Read moreRead less

Planning for sustainable use of ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) can only be done with an accurate understanding of how ecosystems are likely to change, and at what rate, under persistent climate change. This project, aligned with National Research Priority 'An Environmentally Sustainable Australia', will be performed over 3 oceans and focusing on the GBR, will contribute to the national benefit by rapidly improving our understanding on one such major factor-the endolithic community in coral skeletons. It will allow better predictions of short and long-term consequences to reefs, and will also continue to show Australia's leadership in understanding the rate and direction of changes within coral reef ecosystems.Read moreRead less

This project will provide the scientific basis to inform management policies to promote and maintain healthy coral reefs, both in Australia and overseas, which are suffering through climate change impacts. This work, which contributes directly to National Research Priority An Environmentally Sustainable Australia, will provide environmental benefits through understanding how degraded reefs can recover. The Great Barrier Reef alone is worth more than $6 billion in tourism and fisheries revenue, and understanding how to maintain healthy coral reefs will contribute to the long-term sustainable growth of these industries. It will also help ensure continued use and provision of reef goods and services to coastal communities in tropical Australia.Read moreRead less
