The Australian Social Science Data Archive (ASSDA) supports researchers in a wide range of social science and humanities disciplines. These researchers are both primary and secondary users of data collected across a range of economic, social, political and cultural areas. Increasingly, complex public policy problems require multi-disciplinary solutions based on a range of data sources to address these problems. This proposal provides a means for Australia's leading edge researchers to advance the knowledge base that can lead to the development of strong evidence based policy. The open access policies of ASSDA ensures that the general public, media, non-government organisation (NGOs) and government agencies are able to examine the public use data sets that are used by researchers to arrive at their conclusions.Read moreRead less

Resourcing Public Law Enforcement Agencies in the 21st Century; Coercion, Sale and Gift. This project will analyse three basic means of enhancing the resources of public law enforcement agencies: circumstances wherein police command cooperation from private institutions; those where police buy and sell services; and those where police are the beneficiaries of private sponsorship. The potentials and limits of these three forms of exchange will be studied in each Australian State and Territory, in ....Resourcing Public Law Enforcement Agencies in the 21st Century; Coercion, Sale and Gift. This project will analyse three basic means of enhancing the resources of public law enforcement agencies: circumstances wherein police command cooperation from private institutions; those where police buy and sell services; and those where police are the beneficiaries of private sponsorship. Community rights in an age of footloose capital: mining in decentralised Indonesia. Indonesia is in the midst of a mining boom. In the islands closest to Australia, mining holds out the promise to eradicate poverty. Changed political and legal frameworks have led to increased foreign investment but created new challenges for local populations struggling to assert their rights, maximise benefit and minimise harm.

Using the history of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia as a focus, it will provide the first broad historical analysis of the various social scientific fields in Australia since WWII. The Kids in Communities Study: national investigation of community level effects on children's developmental outcomes. This project (a cross-disciplinary collaboration) will investigate community level factors influencing early childhood developmental outcomes using a mixed methods approach in up to 10 communities across Australia. This will result in a potential set of measures or indicators that reflect communities that are good for children.
Ethnographies of housing: exploring the role of housing officers in public housing service provision. This research examines the everyday practice of public housing officers working in the Victorian Office of Housing. It aims to analyse the ways that workers exercise discretion, and the patterns of meanings that they construct, through their interactions with clients, departmental managers and other human service providers. It is the first ethnographic study of front-line work in housing servi ....Ethnographies of housing: exploring the role of housing officers in public housing service provision.
