Functional neuroimaging provides a tremendous amount of information about the brain, but what it shows about the mind is less clear. Hume's Sceptical Materialism. The early modern period is the decisive period in shaping the modern outlook, but its major figures are not well understood in Australia. This project will enable a broader and more unified understanding of the intellectual movements of the period (showing Hume to be not an intellectual outsider but someone offering a sceptical version of the radical Enlightenment) - and so will enable a better understanding of our intellectual heritage.
Trust and the Changing Moral Economy of Australian Medicine. There is strong evidence that patients sue their doctors because of inadequate doctor/patient communication, and this has been directly linked to low levels of trust. But unless doctors have become worse communicators over time, poor communication fails to explain recent rises in litigation rates. This historical study will examine the multiple factors affecting changing doctor/patient relationships. By tracing this longstanding idea through the twentieth century, this project will identify implications for current climate science.

Nature and culture in German Romantic philosophy and environmental philosophy. In light of the recent scholarship on the philosophical significance of German romanticism, this project will provide the first study that focuses on the relation between nature and culture in German romantic philosophy. It will also initiate a dialogue on the potential of German romantic ideas to address concerns within environmental philosophy.
