There is an urgent need for innovative approaches to combat widespread decline of koalas. This project aims to develop technology, integrating behavioural change theory and community co-design, to enable the public to participate in koala conservation. This interdisciplinary initiative will harness the power of citizen science to facilitate mutually-beneficial educational interactions. Expected outcomes include the production of innovative solar-powered Bluetooth ear tags and co-designing a smartphone application that educates and incentivises users in recognising signs of koala disease and submitting sightings, by leveraging gamification, outdoor recreation and tourism. This blueprint can be adapted to assist other threatened species.Read moreRead less

This Post Doc will utilise skills in these areas to support key CRC activities. This application will enable USC to retain a valuable and skilled researcher which the CRC has invested in the development of, and through additional efforts of the Post Doc will enable other CRC participants to capitalise on this knowledge and expertise.
Prawns and Barramundi, soon to be followed by other sectors, are developing & implementing national marketing strategies which will largely rely on having effective relationships with specialist seafood retailers. A separate project (MT040) is being developed to investigate how best to engage with this channel & implement strategies in partnership with these seafood retailers.
This Post Doc will work closely with the CRC Projects Manager and apply research knowledge and skills in relation to business strategy, business models and social networks/capital to project MT040.
Specific Key Project Involvement:
MT040 Know the retailer - strategies for working with specialist seafood retailers: Work as a Co-Investigator on this project, with specific responsibility for developing and evaluating effective methods for engaging specialist seafood retailers in industry marketing activities, and the sharing of best practice. This concept has been approved by the CRC Board, and full detail will be contained in the Full Proposal currently being developed
2011/736 National Prawn Category Marketing Strategy: Work with the Marketing Manager (and others) on implementation process with Queensland Prawn Fishers - an area identified as the one of the most difficult to engage with
2010/777 Identification of the core leadership group and network structure of East Coast Trawl to develop, implement and evaluate strategic opportunities: Implement recommendations coming out of this project
2008/794.20 Repositioning Australian farmed Barramundi in the domestic market: Assist with implementation of actions coming out of this project.
Other projects identified over the next 14 months.
A current process of harvesting outputs that can be extended is being undertaken within the CRC by the Program Managers for Programs 2 and 3, as well as the Seafood Project Manager. This process will identify 2 priorities for extension via this PDRS.
A Full work plan will be developed with the Program Manager Program 2 and the Seafood Project Manager, and reviewed and updated on a quarterly basis.Read moreRead less
Engaging ethnic minority and majority blood donors in donor recruitment. Word-of-mouth is a potentially powerful way to recruit blood donors. This project aims to determine how to motivate blood donors to recruit new donors using word-of-mouth, through research comprising co-design, surveys, and experiments. This project will generate new knowledge of how to encourage effective word-of-mouth for pro-social behaviours. Expected outcomes include producing culturally relevant, validated resources that will significantly benefit Australia by encouraging effective conversations to promote blood donation in all communities.Read moreRead less

McKinna reported that current activities provide little or no marketing relevance to Australian abalone because of the lack of total supply chain integration and quality assurance and product integrity systems. He recommended that the Australian abalone industry develop and implement a QA system that results in producing consistently high quality product for the market.
Consultation with abalone processors has revealed a variable level of quality control driven by financial rewards and penalties to divers delivering fish to the factory. Most processors endorse the need for some form of nationally unified scheme.
Objectives: 1. To implement a voluntary QA program that is used by at least 80% of the Australian abalone industry and is self funded, by December 2010. 2. To ensure that the QA program is owned and operated by the Abalone Council of Australia, is sustainable and is self funding. Read moreRead less

In order to provide useful outcomes for the CRC end-users in WA, an extension strategy for each of the above outputs must be implemented. Each project output will have a different audience and the extension approach needs to be tailored to meet the audience and the product. In addition new R&D projects will emerge as people involved in delivering projects outputs engage with the end users. It is important for these R&D opportunities to be developed through the CRC in a timely fashion.
