Summary
Osteoporosis (OP) prevalence is greater for disadvantaged groups, as are less healthy lifestyles. Whilst reasons for this social gradient of OP are unknown, some biological phenomena are influenced by lifestyle factors. I will provide novel evidence about biological mechanisms underlying the social gradient of OP (epigenetics), and, using that information, engage disadvantaged communities in multidisciplinary discussions to inform effective public health interventions (community engagement).

Optimising health in the early years has been recognised as critical for lifelong health and wellbeing. My research program will focus on reducing inequalities in maternal and child health among disadvantaged families. I will examine important questions concerning the quality of maternity care Indigenous women receive, and how factors beyond the health system, such as housing, work patterns and neighbourhood resources, contribute to poor maternal and child health amongst disadvantaged families.

Summary
Influenza is an example of an infectious disease that remains a global challenge, causing annual outbreaks and disruptive pandemics. My group works with basic scientists and social researchers to understand the way influenza and other infections spread, and how drugs and vaccines protect. I have built local capability in computer simulation modeling that brings this rich body of evidence together, to promote understanding of disease and inform health policy in Australia and internationally.

This research investigates effects of social adversity on the health of parents and carers and their children. We will examine the effects of adversity on parents’ and carers’ physical and mental health, health behaviours and capacity to provide care for their children, and how in turn children’s health and development may be affected. We will then examine whether designing health services that are responsive to families specific needs and strengths may help to promote health and resilience.

Summary
We cannot accurately estimate the occurrence of many diseases and risk factors for remote Indigenous communities where more of the ‘health gap’ is suffered. Interventions targeting substance misuse risk factors have not yet produced the community- and individual-level impacts they were designed to bring about. In this Fellowship, I will improve evaluation methods and measures to produce credible evidence for assessing program implementation and effectiveness in remote communities.

Mitochondrial “respiratory chain complexes are multi-subunit assemblies that function to produce most of our cellular energy. Defects in the assembly of these complexes can result in mitochondrial disease, including infant death. The assembly of the respiratory complexes is a complicated procedure and the mechanisms involved in disease remain elusive. This work will aid in our understanding of how these protein complexes are built and how defects in their assembly can cause disease.
