Active Team – Examining An Online Social Networking Intervention To Increase Physical Activity In Controlled (RCT) And Ecological (ET) Settings
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$814,041.00
Summary
Lifestyle diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, are key health problems facing Australia. Effective, low-cost, mass-reach physical activity interventions are urgently needed. This project uses online social networks to deliver an innovative physical activity intervention. This project will determine how effective the software is in changing people’s lifestyle over 12 months, and whether viral marketing techniques can be used to disseminate the program on a mass scale.

This project will benefit Australia's scientific knowledge and technology base in the areas of evolutionary computation, business intelligence, and decision management. The outcomes will advance Australian companies and organisations, as many common yet complex business problems can be better addressed with systems that automatically learn and adapt to environmental changes. Such complex business problems include dynamic scheduling (in the manufacturing sector), resource allocation optimisation (in the defence, mining, and agriculture sectors), and network design optimisation (in the telecommunications and energy sectors).Read moreRead less

The City of Onkaparinga, Fleurieu Regional Development and Flinders University have pooled their resources to identify new technologies capability in the Southern Adelaide region. Strategic and collaborative initiatives with business associations will be evaluated for the development of new economic strategies for these technologies. This region is highly representative of similar regional areas within Australia, in which the identification of new technologies capability is not well characterised. With a reduction in conventional heavy industry in the region, it is believed that a better understanding of new technologies capability for application to the southern region will promote essential economic growth.Read moreRead less
Young People with Disability & Young Carers: Opportunities & Contributions. This project aims to examine opportunities that young people with disability and young carers (aged 12-24) value and access, and contributions they make to families, communities and society. Using novel conceptual framing, qualitative research and large-scale survey data, the project expects to provide new knowledge on how policy can support access to valued opportunities and contributions for young people with disability and young carers to support them to reach their full potential. Young people are centrally involved as co-researchers and the project is guided by a Policy Advisory Group. Benefits include evidence for a strengths-based policy approach to disability and care, longer-term economic gains and improved social cohesion.Read moreRead less

Consumers currently use the traditional technology of the Public Switched Telephone Network system without fear of eavesdropping. Law Enforcement has a legal right to intercept phone calls under prescribed conditions. This project offers support to policy makers and users in providing strategic advice in the secure transition of telecommunications to next generation networks. It provides a software solution to the threat to user privacy that may also feasibly be used to provide electronic evidence for law enforcement and intelligence agencies who increasingly have to look to means other than traditional telecommunications interception for evidence gathering from VoIP telephony. This research aims to develop and evaluate an intervention program targeted to young men using violence against their girlfriends. This intervention program focuses on dating violence with young men who are not yet involved with the criminal justice system. This innovation addresses a gap in stopping male violence, positioned between universal primary violence prevention programs and the tertiary prevention of the criminal justice system's adult domestic violence perpetrator programs. The research outcomes include:an evidence based intervention program aimed at stopping young men's violence against women;a training program for professionals;and documented standards of practice for working with young men and gendered violence.Read moreRead less

Metal tank silos house some of the most dangerous chemicals, which erode the internal structure of the tank over time. It is critical to check the integrity of the tank to prevent disasters from occurring. NDE solutions uses a rapid motion scanner (RMS) to scan the interior surface of the container while it is still full of its storage material. It is the aim of this project to use Augmented Reality, to overlay the scan provided by the RMS, onto the worker's view of the tank, control the robot via. hand gestures, and facilitate remote training/guidance. The result will allow for inspection workers to quickly and accurately the location of critical failures, without performing the hazardous procedures of internal tank inspection. Read moreRead less
Autoconfiguration of critical network infrastructure. In 2000, Vitek Boden hacked into Maroochy Shire's sewerage system, causing hundreds of kilolitres of raw sewage to flow into a public area, causing financial and environmental damage, and the potential for the spread of life-threatening disease. The goal of this project is to improve the security of Australia's critical infrastructure, for instance, electricity and water supply. The project’s approach is to simplify the critical bottlenecks in communication between plant equipment and company management, namely, the firewall that protects the critical plant equipment from viruses and hackers. Simplification will improve transparency and hence reduce the possibility that security holes allow an incident similar to that of this incident, or worse.Read moreRead less
