Understanding, controlling and patterning of ferroelectric domain arrays for advanced device applications. The aim of this project is to understand, fabricate and use patterned ferroelectric domain arrays on the fine scale for advanced materials applications. The resultant domain-patterned technology and processing approaches may significantly impact the development of integrated nonlinear optic devices used in information and communication technology.

The Dynamic Mechanical Analyser (DMA) and Control Stress Rheometer System is a unique set of equipment where both instruments can be run simultaneously using the same controller module. The DMA can provide quantitative and qualitative information on high spectrum of mechanical and rheological properties of materials in solid state. The Rheometer complements the DMA by providing information about properties of materials in liquid state. The equipment will be used both for academic research of plastic, ceramic and composite materials and for industrial projects in the areas of material processing, recycling of plastics and for building a database of material's properties. Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron Beam Techniques. Neutron scattering is one of the most powerful and important investigative tools in the study of materials. Australia has only a low-flux neutron source, HIFAR, which provides no cold or hot neutrons. This excludes large, important areas of science, such as functional films, polymers, self-assembly systems, biological materials, colloids and emulsions, and real-time in-situ studies.

This application aims to continue Australia's partnership with the world's most intense neutron source, ISIS in the UK, in order to sustain the considerable Australian scientific momentum which now relies on ISIS.
The outcomes will be new science that cannot be generated solely within Australia.

Summary
Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron Beam Techniques. The access to ISIS is of strategic benefit to Australia. In the 'run up' to the Replacement Research Reactor that benefit will be increased because of the current upgrade to ISIS and the imminent construction of a second target station to provide the world's best 'cold neutron' facilities.

This project aims to determine the corrosion behaviour of chromia-scale forming iron- and nickel-base alloys in the presence of deposits (coal ashes and salts) under carbon dioxide rich gas atmospheres. The increased understanding of alloy behaviour in hot corrosive ashes and gases, will permit more effective materials design and selection leading to more efficient and economic technologies for reliable and low cost carbon capture in energy production, waste-energy conversion and related industries.Read moreRead less

This project will investigate the correlation between surface plasmonic resonance and photocatalytic activities on the atomic level. Heterogeneous engineering and in-situ investigation of atomic-level photocatalytic dynamics is expected to yield several new full-solar-spectrum photocatalysts. The project is expected to contribute to the understanding of the processes and mechanisms underlying photocatalysis, and lead to useable, stable and durable photocatalytics. The outcomes will enable efficient, cost-effective and reliable production of clean energy in a low-emission way.Read moreRead less
